Square Wheels Posted February 27, 2021 Author Share #4 Posted February 27, 2021 When I was in better running shape, I was a 9 - 9:30 person, number of miles didn't seem to matter. A really good mile for me would be 8. To qualify at my age, I need a prior marathon at a pace of 7:45. That's just to get in to the lottery. I'll likely never run Boston, I can't afford it and I'm too slow.
ChrisL Posted February 27, 2021 Share #5 Posted February 27, 2021 Wow, no 4:30 was my best marathon. The other two were right around 5 hours.
dinneR ★ Posted February 27, 2021 Share #6 Posted February 27, 2021 Running is evil. How evil do you have to be to qualify?
Zephyr Posted February 27, 2021 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2021 For my age..., I could qualify no problem if they let me ride my bike. If I HAD to run, I could run one 8:20 mile..., the other 25 I wouldnt even come close

I'd be about 5 1/2 hours after the deadline for my age.
BuffJim Posted February 27, 2021 Share #14 Posted February 27, 2021 My brother ran it it a few decades ago. He finished, but other than saying he was pretty cold, don’t remember his details.
Prophet Zacharia Posted February 28, 2021 Share #15 Posted February 28, 2021 I have two buddies who have run it. I have no interest, nor could I qualify.
groupw Posted February 28, 2021 Share #16 Posted February 28, 2021 My son ran in 2008. It was an amazing experience and made me really want to qualify. I did my first half in 2010. I ran my best half in 2013. That pace was near BQ pace. A full was plausible, but right around then they upped the standard significantly. A BQ became a pipe dream for me. I did it myself as I was on pace for a sub 4 marathon but had a melt down, had to walk for a while to recover as my pace was too high to sustain & finished in 5... I had issues in that area on my only marathon. Part of it was a shoe fit issue that never presented itself until I got into that stage of the marathon. It also rained that morning before the race. When the sun came out at mile 7 for me, it turned into a sauna! Even experienced marathoners were struggling. I was disappointed in my time and knew I had left time on the table. I thought about doing another, but the level of focus to train for a full is so much more than a half. I would rather ride my bike...

Yeah, the long slow training run is the key. Ya gotta get the brain used to the duration of the run, not really any different than a looong bike ride.
MickinMD ★ Posted February 28, 2021 Share #23 Posted February 28, 2021 When I was running marathons in my 30's, I wouldn't have qualified - I was under 4 hours, but not by much. Still, I was doing an 8 min/mile avg. for a little over 26 miles!
