Officer shot in the face today

Considering the circumstances, that's good news. Any idea what was happening?

2 suspects are still at large.  Bike path is being scoured.  I guess one of them is either on foot or on a bike.

Officer in stable but critical condition.  He is being airlifted to OHSU now.   :unhappy:

Heard on the news he was flown into the Regional (smallish) airport. They handle Nike/Intel jets so they aren't tiny. Then ambulance to OHSU in PDX. Right in the rush hour crush. They will have full escort but don't know why they did not helicopter him in from Hillsboro

Peace be the healing and recovery.  I hope your guy makes it through this.

This summer we saw several interviews on the local news with police who had been shot in the line of duty, telling their stories. One of my senior reporters just wrote an opinion piece about police/person of interest standoffs.  ABQ made national news this summer for our militarized police force, so his commentary is examining "protect and serve" in an atmosphere of conflict escalation.

I'd be interested in reading the op.

I am not too much a fan of Reddit; it is too chaotic and it is impossible to follow interesting threads.  There was an interesting article about violence in the US written by a German police officer.  It is primarily about why US police use deadly force but he made an interesting point:

Another reason for that is the difference in prison sentences. If I was a drug dealer in the US and I had 20 pounds of coke in my trunk when a cop stops me for a broken taillight, I'd seriously calculate my chances of killing him and getting away. There is simply no reason for me to do that in Germany. The prison sentences are laughable here. It's just not worth it. If they arrest me with the coke here, I do two, maybe three years. If I kill a cop, I get 15 years minimum. It's just not worth it. And while I, just as many other officers in Germany, get frustrated with the lax prison sentences, I do realize that they are a big part of what makes my job so safe compared to the US.
