How does one tell a good hug from a bad hug?

A good hug....that's not your spouse....is light and the person could also touch you lightly on shoulder and say something like, "good to see you".

I find this issue rather interesting...on the Asian side, especially if you're more westernized, yes of course.  But it is so possible to greet a person  warmly by holding their hand and tipping your head forward respectfully, eyes on floor.  People so uncertain about hugging, should look to how some Asian cultures greet or say good-bye more formally, with deep respect and love.  There is a way to do it that's personalized and with a real smile. It's not hard nor disrespectful.

My family and my wife's family are quite the hug and kissers.  Anyone coming around needs to be prepared for a good hug.  My DiL is an exception, we wait for her to initiate if she wants a hug.  I don't know if it's upbringing or Filipino culture.  Daughter's BF, also Filipino, is always up for a great bear hug.
