Road Runner Posted September 1, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2014 I was digging through my old LP's last night and played a few. It always amazes me how well 40+ year old technology holds up. They sound just like they did 45 years ago when they were new. I always think about how these inanimate objects sit on my shelves for 30 or 40 years without ever seeing the light of day and then, voila!, MUSIC!!! Beautiful rich sounds just biding their time, waiting to be unleashed into the air again. Remarkable stuff.
Ralphie ★ Posted September 1, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 1, 2014 I think some assholes stored my wife's and my records so that they warped and molded. I do fondly remember the power of the Shure stylus, but also the double-edged sword of low tracking weight. You had to be veeery careful not to make it skip. Road Runner Posted September 1, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted September 1, 2014 I still have my "stereo system" which dominates my living room. Some components are as old as circa 1970, some as new as fours years old.
kingtermite Posted September 1, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 1, 2014 No. I've got a few vinyl records from when I was young, but I haven't had a record player in 20+ years.
TrentonMakes Posted September 1, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 1, 2014 I was at my brother's last weekend and he's gotten himself a turntable and a passel of records - kind of neat to experience that again. We grew up with a big console stereo in the living room. (but I'm quite happy with my iPod )
JerrySTL ★ Posted September 1, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 1, 2014 I still have a turntable hooked up to my stereo system. I mostly use it to covert rare records into MP3s. I haven't even done that in about 6 months.
Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted September 1, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 1, 2014 Last night was the Cincinnati fireworks show. Simulcast to some 80's rock. Halfway thru we muted the sound and I played some Muddy Waters vinyl. Last weekend I bought a vinyl copy of 'I'm John Lee Hooker'. Technics turntable with a Pioneer tuner/amp
Zealot Posted September 2, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 2, 2014 Yes RR. Occassionally I do that as well. And it's sublime!
Pokey Posted September 2, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 2, 2014 Oh hell yes. I'll put up with the occasional pop/hiss whatever. To me and my crappy ears, vinyl sound so much more true than a cd or iTune. There is a depth to the sound that, to me, has not been picked up by the new media.
