goldendesign Posted May 5, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2021 Put the new tube in today, cleaned everything and checked over the bike. It was a fairly narly pot hole. Now I'm noticing a wobble in the wheel when looking at the brake pad gap. Is this an indication of wheel true? The wobble seems fairly consistent on both front and back wheel. goldendesign Posted May 5, 2021 Author Share #2 Posted May 5, 2021 Also noticed the kinda grinding while the rear is spinning. Gonna have to source that too
dinneR ★ Posted May 5, 2021 Share #3 Posted May 5, 2021 yes. You should buy a new bike. 3
maddmaxx ★ Posted May 5, 2021 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2021 At a minimum new wheels. Yes it's out of true and the rear is probably rubbing on the pads if it's just as bad. A quick true will probably fix it.
Razors Edge ★ Posted May 5, 2021 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2021 I also just do a quick check of spoke tension. You may have a few that have loosened up over time and just lubing the nipples and putting some tension back on them helps. There is a more in-depth process for doing it, but it is surprising how just one loose spoke throws a wobble into a wheel. The back looks like more issues as it seems to go in and out in more places. Another challenge, though, is that you just screwed with the one wheel when you swapped the tube and remounted the tire. An non-optimal tube and tire mounting could cause some issues. Gotta know if it is the tube/tire or the wheel that is actually wacky.
ChrisL Posted May 5, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 5, 2021 Yeah it’s a bit out of true. A good mechanic should be able to true it up. The grinding may be wheel bearings. About 2X a year I remove the wheels & shock for side to side play in the hubs and then give them a spin holding on to either side of the hub. You can feel any binding or grinding in the bearings.

Checked the spokes all seem tight, brought my depth caliper out and attached to the frame. Both have just under a millimeter wobble. Called my LBS thats done some work for me before they quoted me $20 a wheel and an afternoon. Seems fair, I'll drop it by tomorrow.
jsharr ★ Posted May 5, 2021 Share #8 Posted May 5, 2021 Yes, out of true. Not badly though. the price is not bad nor it the turn around, all things considered. I enjoy getting a wheel as true as I can with just my eyeballs and a spoke wrench, but I am weird.
groupw Posted May 6, 2021 Share #9 Posted May 6, 2021 Yep. It’s a little out of true. $20/wheel is fair.
Dottleshead ★ Posted May 6, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 6, 2021 Tighten each spoke to the same, proper torque and presto! True.

bikeman564™ Posted May 6, 2021 Share #13 Posted May 6, 2021 They could use a tweak. Might have a couple spokes a tad loose. Shouldn't take much to bring those in true.
Rattlecan ★ Posted May 6, 2021 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2021 They are within functional tolerances but could use a tweak.
