At mass vaccination clinics: maybe a doctor doing the jab

At the big mass vaccination clinics in convention centres...

Because alot of elective surgery has been postponed due to covid, surgeons, other doctor specialists have signed up to do vaccinations. After all, they need to keep employed.

Sister-doctor signed up and does at least 2 4-hr. shifts per wk. ..in addition to her 36 hrs. regular work shift at the hospital on weekends. She heads off to the clinics coordinated by the teaching hospitals.

At the mass site that I went to for the vaccination, all the "medical" team was from the local hospital.   Everyone doing the injections was either a doctor, PA, NP or nurse from the nearby facility.  National guard people did check in and security (and escorted anyone who needed extra help)  and a few volunteers helped direct people to the open rooms for the next shot and answered questions for anyone waiting in line.  I was really impressed at the efficiency and friendliness of everyone involved - a really upbeat attitude as everyone knew they were contributing to make a difference.

Kudos to your sister for volunteering  and doing what she can to help.

The vaccinators who have been interviewed by the press, do enjoy the work....because it's steps towards a brighter future.

For sure, sister finds this work quite different what she has to normally deal with.  She feels slightly guilty that maybe she should be offering herself as a physician to help out the burnt-out physician-specialists who are handling with covid patient care load.

However she made a decision for now since she does have 2 children and a hubby who works full-time as a delivery truck driver for post office. CAnada Post had some covid cases at 1 of the major mail distribution plants in Toronto.

We have big clinics here at the local rinks.  People doing the actual sticking are various levels of nurses, or lab techs.  There are docs at the clinic but they are not giving shots.  They are 'floating' among the 10-30 stab stations to be available in the event of immediate adverse reactions.

Most of the time my family doctor doesn't give me flu, pneumonia, or shingles jabs.  Before he sees me - usually at every-3-month diabetes blood test follow-ups, a nurse checks my temp and b.p., asks me if the meds they have listed are current, and gives me any vaccinations before the doctor comes into the room.  That works out ok with me, because it gives the doctor time look over any other complaints I have besides the scheduled shot and test follow-up.

As Canada's biggest city and quite a number of acute care and rehabilitation hospitals across the city to serve, Toronto would have a high number of doctor-specialists (meaning not just family doctor credentials) because alot of elective surgery is postphoned...so enough of these doctors looking for work at this time.  There was a call-out to recently retired nurses and doctors also, some who responded and are doing it.

I'm not sure if we are still doing them in the US or not, but that is sort of what I would expect - trained shot givers doing the injections and support staff doing all the other stuff to keep lines moving.

We got our shot at CVS in a Target from the pharmacist.  Since CVS does flu shots, I guess they already have trained shot givers?  Anyway, we were the only two getting a shot - no lines, no wait, no drama - so perhaps, in many places, the big wave of vaccinations is over, and doctors can head back to their old ways.

Like Mick, the last shot I got - tetanus booster - was by the nurse, not the doctor.  I think the only time I have the "doctor" give me a shot is during a dental procedure like a filling replacement where the dentist numbs the area with a novacaine shot.

CAnada is using a blend of nurses, some doctors for the clinics (small and large).  I said these doctors who are administering the shots....some are unemployed at this time because the surgeries have been postponed.  They need to work.  There's no unemployment insurance for them.  I know this because my sister is a physician (but she is employed at hospital).

Each province is handling things and scheduling, slightly different with broad unifying national guidelines and practices. We also have option for pharmacists at pharmacy to do it...it but depends which group/vaccine and roll-out schedule.  I didn't have a choice of pharmacy for my date since I was in the earlier group that got it.

The guy that gave me mine was a dirty little ragamuffin.  He said he had to start giving covid shots to make ends meet after getting run off the streets of Greenville, SC where he had a great career as a street urchin cut short by The Man!

Sadly, Carl passed otherwise he may have had gainful employment in his latter years.
