jsharr ★ Posted May 17, 2021 Share #4 Posted May 17, 2021 Did you spend $.95 and realize the thing in your hand was a nickle back and you threw it away as a reflex action? 1

Popular Post Wilbur ★ Posted May 18, 2021 Author Popular Post Share #12 Posted May 18, 2021 OK, well my mythology is a little fuzzy and names seem to vanish but, it stems from Greek mythology when the belief was the ferryman over the River Styx required a coin to secure your passage to the great beyond. The slogan of the Salvation Army was to "throw a nickel on the drum to pay for your salvation" was later altered by military in both world wars and later Korea and by the US during Vietnam. The saying became "Throw a nickel on the grass to save a fighter pilots ass." but it has been used throughout aviation to honour a fallen pilot. This is why there are often coins left at tombstones in cemeteries. 1 3
MickinMD ★ Posted May 18, 2021 Share #13 Posted May 18, 2021 Having grown up very poor, I've never even thrown pennies away. Once when I was a kid and it cost a nickel to buy bubble gum, baseball cards, etc. some of my classmates at recess teased me for picking up a penny lying on the ground - it was allegedly beneath us to pick up a measly penny. Several more pennies were dropped on the ground to see if I'd pick them up. I did and took the teasing. I went across the street to a neighborhood store and bought a pack of baseball cards. I was never teased about picking up pennies again.
