Well actually, the crossing arm..I didnt get up to look..trees kinda block my view..but I could hear the ringing of the crossing  arm for a coup and e of hours last night..obviously..they were stuck. Thankfully...it was only a light clanging in the distance...I am sure it was terrible for a few houses closer to the crossing.

Sorry to hear that annoying temporary problem, petite.

I'm always amazed by people who buy a home near commuter train lines ...don't they even they think of the dinging bell.  I can see from balcony, far away a transit train amongst screen of park trees and shrubbery.

As for the transcontinental freight trains:  we NEED them...they bring our bike shipments, potash for farmers, etc.

What was interesting when we were cycling Burgundy wine region in France, was to suddenly see a fast speed passenger train running through flat area near vineyards out in the country.  It's just something one wouldn't see in CAnada.

I really wish CAnada had a more extensive network of passenger rail.  Every few years, there is a citizen push for rail connection between our city and Banff.

When I get back to my house, I'll have to get re-used to an occasional night sound. There's a drawbridge a couple miles from my house on the Patapsco River leading to and from the Chesapeake Bay.  When freighters are going to pass under it in the middle of the night, they sound a few low-pitched horn blasts that can be heard at my house and can be really loud if the atmosphere helps sound transmission.  If the bridge doesn't rise up fast enough for them, they sound several more blasts.

I like both those ship horns and train whistles.  When we camp up in Shenandoah, the freight trains occasionally roll through at night and you can hear them in the distance. It's never intrusive, but rather just another "different" sound to go along with the other sounds at night.

Speaking of trains. This iconic steam locomotive is rolling through this afternoon. The Norfolk and Southern 611 Steam engine is going up to Strasburg PA to run summer excursions from the train museum up there. The locomotive is spending the night at the Manassas train station nearby before heading up to PA in the morning.

There is supposed to be an identification number and a phone number on each crossing signal.  You can call the phone number and report that signal number as malfunctioning.
