Popular Post JerrySTL ★ Posted May 25, 2021 Popular Post Share #1 Posted May 25, 2021 With the GAPCO ride beginning next week, I decided to change both chains, front derailleur, freewheel, both tires and Slime tubes. Below is what I found when changing the rear tire! There were also three other broke spokes. The wheel had two broke spokes previously so I fortunately had ordered a new rear wheel just in case. I'm surprised that I didn't notice the problem while riding, but the wheel seemed to be true when I gave it a pre-ride spin just yesterday. WoJSTL actually asked if the wheel broke because she is too heavy. Of course I said "Yes". (That is a lie. I'm not that damned crazy.) 6 1

groupw Posted May 25, 2021 Share #3 Posted May 25, 2021 Wow! My MTB would not stay true. LBS owner saw cracks starting by the spokes I had missed, but nothing like that.

More weight does break spokes but most tandems have high spoke count wheels to help prevent that.
ChrisL Posted May 25, 2021 Share #5 Posted May 25, 2021 Good thing you checked! I take it you haven’t had any issues getting parts then?

Actually I have getting parts for the rear wheel. It's a 26" wheel with an old-fashion 7-speed freewheel and a disk brake. That's a rare combo and I've only been able to find one wheel which I bought a while back. However it doesn't look that sturdy. I'm wondering if I could get a wheel that would take a 7-speed cassette and would it work with my derailleur? I might just build a wheel using the old hub. Popular Post Rattlecan ★ Posted May 25, 2021 Popular Post Share #7 Posted May 25, 2021 You should go post on BF and ask if JB Weld would fix it. 1 1

Seems like ANY 26" rim - with a brake strip or not - would work on a rebuild of the existing wheel??? So, assuming the freewheel/hub/brake mounts is ok, couldn't a used (and plentiful) matching spoke-count wheel be sacrificed to get a good rim, and then new spokes be chosen to pair the existing hub to the replacement rim? Or is the freewheel/hub/brake mount FUBAR too?

Or just take it to the shop that trued the wheels 7 years ago and demand they fix it. Make sure to mention you were "just riding along". They love that line.
Longjohn ★ Posted May 25, 2021 Share #11 Posted May 25, 2021 Maybe you should switch positions with your wife and see if you break anymore wheels. 1

maddmaxx ★ Posted May 26, 2021 Share #15 Posted May 26, 2021 You have to wonder how much tension was put in the spokes when the wheel was trued.

I thought he was being snarky! No way "embrittlement " is a word, and surely "a high tension pull through" was definitely a veiled perverted comment! 1
