Good thing that I inspected the tandem

WoJSTL actually asked if the wheel broke because she is too heavy. Of course I said "Yes". (That is a lie. I'm not that damned crazy.)

Lol, but you were thinking about it.

More weight does break spokes but most tandems have high spoke count wheels to help prevent that.

Good thing you checked!  I take it you haven’t had any issues getting parts then?

Actually I have getting parts for the rear wheel. It's a 26" wheel with an old-fashion 7-speed freewheel and a disk brake. That's a rare combo and I've only been able to find one wheel which I bought a while back. However it doesn't look that sturdy. I'm wondering if I could get a wheel  that would take a 7-speed cassette and would it work with my derailleur? I might just build a wheel using the old hub.

Seems like ANY 26" rim - with a brake strip or not - would work on a rebuild of the existing wheel???  So, assuming the freewheel/hub/brake mounts is ok, couldn't a used (and plentiful) matching spoke-count wheel be sacrificed to get a good rim, and then new spokes be chosen to pair the existing hub to the replacement rim?

Or is the freewheel/hub/brake mount FUBAR too?

I just ordered a new MTB wheelset with an 8-speed cassette hub plus a 7-speed cassette and a spacer. I just  hope it all gets here in time.

You should go post on BF and ask if JB Weld would fix it.

Or just take it to the shop that trued the wheels 7 years ago and demand they fix it.  Make sure to mention you were "just riding along".  They love that line.

Below is what I found when changing the rear tire!

You must have had some super strong rim tape.  (At least that's what it like)   What kept the tube from blowing thru the hole?

Good call...  (from a guy who rides a tandem with his wife too)

I was wondering that also. Tires are only 40 psi. Velox rim tape is good stuff.

You can come get my tandem or have the rear wheel off it.

Don't come in here using fancy insider language.  Stick with the original story that @JerrySTL told his wife.:D

I thought he was being snarky!  No way "embrittlement " is a word, and surely "a high tension pull through" was definitely a veiled perverted comment!
