That's a tough one.  Steering gear on my JD is worn.  It's hard to turn.  Not sure if I could do it with one hand?  So I am torn.  Do I fix the steering gear, or just cut the grass myself?  Either way it is extra work on me.

Plan B.     Buy a new one....  (fixing would be way cheaper)   My new JD X390 has power steering.   OMG is it easy to steer. 

Hope your son has a quick recovery.
