Statistically, fewer people are dying from iceberg attacks these days. However, now that more people are supporting the climate change theory, those numbers a likely to go up.

Maybe we can assign some routine drowning deaths to icebergs?  As they melt, more water is around, so it stands to reason that more water = more drowning (possibilities and/or actual deaths).  We can't underestimate this threat, can we?

Nope and you can rest assured that the epidemic of drowning deaths in the DC area will be dealt with in an effective and costly manner.

I sort of feel like, a century past the Titanic, we're still just a wee bit too worried about them.

Or are they really killing way more sailors these days than the news reports?

People should be afraid if they see a big one: they forget that 90% of them is under the water!

Fortunately, we don't get any icebergs in the Chesapeake Bay.  The only time I ever saw any were on an Alaska Cruise where seals were floating by on small ones in Glacier Bay and bigger ones were calving off the glaciers - close enough to make the big cruise ship bob up and down a little, but they didn't move far from the glacier when we were close to the major one.

Why change something that works, eh?

Afraid of what?  Has there been a rash of iceberg-related collisions, sinkings, and deaths?

We get ice dams on the river that will shutdown some roads in the area. A few lakes get ice shoves but no icebergs

Lots of fatalities? Should we be worried?

I do love those videos of ice piling up on the coast of the various Great Lakes.  It is really neat.

  • Solution

With the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic they also discovered the hardness of the steel used to construct the Titanic was way too hard. When it hit the iceberg it shattered like glass. Shipbuilding at the time was getting way ahead of metallurgy. Ships today are build from a milder steel and not likely to shatter.

And yet, we're STILL WORRIED about icebergs :frantics:

And don’t forget quicksand. I used to lay awake at night and try come up with a plan for how to get out of quicksand.

If you take your spikes you can climb the iceberg over on the edge of the quicksand.  Watch out for the spiders though.  Some of them get past the snakes.

Good news for you is that NO ONE who has prepared for quicksand in advance has ever died in quicksand.  Your preparation for quicksand will pretty much guarantee you will NEVER fall victim to that stealthy danger!
