That's actually the goal.  Global scientists know COVID can't technically be eradicated, due to it's nature.  But it can be contained, like seasonal flus, or the common cold (a similarly constructed but far less deadly virus)

Another interesting side benefit is that a lot of what we've learned about COVID can be applied to the common cold, we're one step closer to a "cure".

They were never politicized.  Common sense was more common back then.
