I have an idea of how the did it. The MD-80 is a newer version of the DC-9 that I worked on. It has 4 overwing escape hatches; an escape hatch in the rear with an inflatable slide; two doors in the front of the cabin with inflatable slides; and even two windows in the cockpit where the aircrew can escape. Add to that highly trained flight attendants to assist in the evacuation.

Private plane owned by a big land developer in Texas only had 18 passengers and three crew aboard don’t think it ever got airborne rolled through a fence at the end of the runway hopefully they had time to get out before it burst into flames but reports are two passengers taken to the hospital everyone else OK nobody in serious condition

Any idea what happened?  Horribly failed takeoff but the plane only had 21 souls onboard?  Overloaded?  Engine failure?  Pilot error, since you were not on deck?

Hard to say.  The photos show no sign of thrust reverser deployment so the takeoff either wasn't rejected or possibly a trim or even thrust mis-setting. Maybe an engine issue but if that was the case, the reject wasn't handled properly.   Good news is no one died and the crew will be available to interview.

So we are in agreement? Flaps.
