Stupid Beyond Belief

I have ranted here before about an office manager I have gotten into it with a few times.  So today she pulled one of the stupidest moves I have ever seen.

She had been out on PTO as her daughter is sick.  She came to work today hacking & coughing.  Coworkers complained so our HR sent her to take a covid test which came back positive.  She’s then told not to return to the office.

So I walk up to the building (I reside in a different building on the same campus) and see her car as I’m walking towards the door. WTF, why is her car here??? Just at that moment she comes out of the door, walks right up to me and as I’m backing away says I have to leave, I have covid.  I tell her if you have covid why are you talking to me, leave!  She then continues to walk towards me and I’m backed up against a wall & tries to explain to me how she got it.  I let her get about three words out when I yell at her, GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME!!!!  She gets the hint & then leaves.  We both had masks on and for about 15 seconds we’re about 4’ from one another…

How stupid do you have to be to one, come to work sick, two come back in the office when you know you are positive for covid and three try to engage a person in dialogue that you have covid?

Me, her coworker and my team all test tomorrow.  I have filed a complaint with our boss & HR.  My boss was pretty hot but isn’t one to fire people.  Maybe HR will force his hand.

Some people are so fucking stupid.

It takes a lot to put me on edge at work. That would have pushed me over. Hoping the best for you and the coworkers. Any chance you have security footage of the encounter?

Already pulled & forwarded to HR.  My reaction is freaking funny too.  I’m backing away with my hands up in the don’t shoot manner.  As she turns & walks towards me I side step her in go inside while she’s following me back in…. I then shut the door on her.

I almost wonder if she was trying to give it to you, also, because of your past run-ins.

Yeah I don’t know.  I’d hate to think she intentionally tried to infect me but who knows.

Well, it's been said that what other people do shouldn't really be your worry. Just you do you, and even crazy shot like her actions shouldn't have an impact on you.

But, even in the "best of times", your stories of her don't show a lot of common sense, team play, or general self-awareness.

I can see HR asking her some difficult questions about this.  "So you were positive and told to leave and then went into other buildings after being told to leave.  Why did you go to other offices in the company after being told to go home?  You knew you are contagious and shouldn't engage other employees in conversation for their safety.  Why did you attempt to engage other employees in conversation, knowing this?".

It sounds like she continually displays extremely poor judgement.  I hope you have documented other incidents with her in the past, that would make it easier for them to make the right decision.

She has a long history of issues that her boss has documented.  My issues with her are documented and HR knows her history.  Actually I work closely with the VP of HR as we work numerous investigations together and she can’t believe she’s still employed.

It really boils down to my boss who is ultimately her boss. He just won’t drop the hammer on problematic employees. It’s really his call.

"They fired me because I got COVID!!!!"  Not something most bosses want being claimed.

I can see where her judgement might be off. Probably worried about what is to come and maybe in denial.  I know people do dumb stuff but I'd never want anyone to lose their livelihood over something like that.

I have people get too close for comfort fairly often and I don't know them. Like mentioned before,  you do you.

I move away,  or say 6 feet. You get those idiots who are coughing without a mask that worry you,  but I just step away if they don't.

He doesn't need to fire her.

All he needs to do is give her a job she doesn't like, and adjust her pay.  Make her Mail Room Package Specialist with a commensurate hourly rate or salary adjustment.

After a short time, she'll 'self-select' by getting another job elsewhere.

I can see it now - her coming by the old office in a month or two to give Chris a hug for helping her change her life and get that huge promotion and pay raise at her new job.  He'll be her hero!

But she will be gone.

And if she manages to wangle a promotion and higher paying job then so much the better.  That makes it all the less likely she'll sue the company for some imagined slight or imagined discrimination.

Win win!  Even better if she went to a competitor!

It needs to be like one of those tubes in the bank.  Put your checks in the tube.  Hit the button and the bottom drops out and the tube disappears.  We should test people standing in a tube.  If they are positive WHHHoooooooosh.  They are standing on the street.  Or better yet, out in the ocean.

I'm glad you filed a complaint - it's good for such things to be on record in cases where the other party may complain and take things out of context.

if we're gonna dream, we might as well dream big!

Often, rather than actually fire or demote folks, the Dilbert route is to promote and move.  Better hope she doesn't finagle a Senior VP of Security spot.

I thought this was going to be about me!

Seriously, though, you should finally be rid of her, if the company has clearly defined rules.

We fired 2 people in just our office already for violating protocols.  At least one wasn't infected, just kept ignoring the rules.  And, yeah, nobody misses him.  We have fared remarkably well globally through all this.

So what is the latest on this?

Just posted in another thread but she hasn’t been back to work and I haven’t seen a Term Notice so I’m guessing she’s just sick with the rona & not ready to return.

An office manager from another site is covering for her. I’d like it if she just stayed as this one is cool to work with.

No discipline in the offing, or are they waiting on her recovery to hopefully sack her?

I really don’t know.  My boss (her boss reports to my boss) really doesn’t discipline nor fire people. Dude puts up with a couple of marginal performers so I doubt he’ll whack her let alone discipline her.  When I told him what happened it was one of the few times he really got pissed so who knows.

I’m really not privy to the info but I do get all term notices company wide so would see it  literally minutes after HR kills her in the system which they haven’t.

I would love to know honest covid stats.  The Ontario government just admitted to recording incidentals to covid hospitalization stats.  ie: if you went in for a broken arm or heart attack and happened to test positive, you were recorded as a "Covid hospitalization".  That accounted for 46% of hospital stays "due to covid".

You should be fine. I once talked to a woman at work for about 30 minutes, the LAST thing she told me was that her cousin was positive and she was waiting for her results. Fortunately I wore a mask and stayed about 5’ away. Now, this was an early variant, not the omicron. But I have a lot of faith in masks, still.

I had a coworker yesterday state how terrible she felt, but intentionally hadn’t tested because she was afraid she’d have to stay home. Yeah, we’re short staffed, but that’s ridiculous and not helping at all!

Does it matter why they went in if they end up hospitalized for covid?  It's not like you can treat the broken arm an ignore the virus and dump them out the door.

The point is, most were asymptomatic yet recorded as hospitalized Covid patients.   Unfortunately, it helps the non-believers  fear that the government is being dishonest as a way of controlling citizens.  Quebec is putting a tax on non-vaxxed citizens.  That crosses the line for me and there is a lot of doubt it will hold up to legal challenges.

We should have locked the place down for a couple of months.  That would have ruffled some feathers.

We don’t know this at all, though. All we know is that they went to hospital “for something else”.  Maybe Almost certainly some were dunderhead COVID deniers who were coughing and wheezing and were all “COVID is a myth” and “it is just a cold, but I am here for this hangnail that hasn’t healed up in over a week”, something like that. Certainly many were asymptomatic and some were mildly symptomatic, too - people don’t stop being people and don’t stop getting omicron if they sprain their ankles.  Plus, why would you not test for COVID when it is raging and you need to segregate the infected from the not infected, and to also help determine how rampant it is?

This news bears watching, but it is no smoking gun at this point. It is information, and people will try and spin it any which way.

In all fairness to those dunderheads, there is a nasty cold circulating as well. My bosses family just got over it.  Multiple Covid tests, all negative.  My daughter just had it, also negative.  The problem is, dishonest recording of covid severity.  Clearly, 46% did not need to be in hospital for covid, they needed to be there for some other reason.

Yeah, the reporting could skewed or the data could be skewed.  Were they admitted to the hospital or just show, get seen, and then go home?  The latter certainly isn’t being “hospitalized” in any sense.

I don’t know anyone who got COVID, went to the ER and were kept there just because they tested positive.  No room in the inn, they were only hospitalized in subsequent visits when they were off the charts bad.  If it ain’t bad, you go home and wait it out until you are in a world of bad, so this is all very muddy if the claim is “almost half of hospitalized COVID cases came in for something else but were only classified as COVID ”.  I suspect that hospitals don’t list just one cause for hospitalization, hospitals may be or probably are listing all the reasons, however numerous.

Also keep in mind stat-padding the other way in some of the red hat areas who reportedly underreported/underrepresented positive cases and hospitalizations because it fit their narratives, too.

I don’t trust the cherry-picked data or the assertions made from it in isolation all that much, just that it probably balances out in the bigger picture.

The ICU numbers tell a clearer story. 83% admitted due to covid.
