I know that the US Military banned it's pilots from flying in Star Wars Canyon after a fighter crashed, killed the pilot and injured some observers.

Not really.  There are conditions that make low level flight dangerous like strong winds, poor visibility or low sun positions.  The Mach Loop is a much more challenging course.

I've read an article about some problems getting the navigation system to behave properly at -1200 ft.  It seems that the aircraft software couldn't believe it.  :lol:
