Popular Post Longjohn ★ Posted January 7, 2022 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 7, 2022 two electric baseboard heaters in the house several years ago. The intent was if we were to go away for a weekend or longer I didn’t want the pipes to freeze. With my eye problems I was told to keep my head up, don’t look down and avoid anything strenuous . With wood heat those restrictions are hard to follow. We had unseasonably warm weather in December so I just left the baseboard heaters run. Well along comes January and we have January weather. It felt a bit chilly in the house but not too bad. I was doing a load of laundry this morning and decided to throw what I was wearing in to make a decent load. Brrr, how cold is it in here? I checked the thermometer, 58°. Well that should keep the pipes from freezing but it’s too cold for me. I built a fire. Today’s high temperature has been reached now 17°, I think I’ll keep that fire going for a few days. 7

Longjohn ★ Posted January 7, 2022 Author Share #6 Posted January 7, 2022 I’m actually seeing pretty good now. They still want me to take it easy so that eye can continue to heal.

It doesn’t burn completely and is a PITA to clean out of the stove. I still have about 20 bags, owl use it eventually. It was a dissapointment.

This is as clean as it gets, anthracite that has been sized and washed. I wonder if it would burn up better if I put a blower on the air intake? Might melt the grates? 1

I generally like 73° in the Winter and that worked for me in my other house, my pre-fire house, and the apartment. But in the rebuilt house it seems a little cold and 75° seems perfect: I like to wear shorts, undershorts, a tee shirt and sandals in the house most of the time. The desired temperature difference may have a lot to do with having one thermostat in the house and slightly different air flow now than previously. The thermometer on my bedroom radio/alarm clock reads 3 degrees cooler, summer and winter, than the living room thermostat, though I don't know how accurate it is. That's cool enough for me to sleep comfortably with a sheet to cover me and no blanket. With my winter heat usage cut almost to 1/3 of previous years (79 therms of nat. gas. in Dec. '21 vs 220 in Dec. 2019 and 212 in Dec. 2018 - heating the 2nd floor and back porch only in '21, similar results in November comparisons) because of the high-efficiency furnace and the perfectly sealed and well-insulated house, I don't think I'd be much greener if I put on more clothes and dropped the thermostat. I'm thrilled with how much less I'm paying for gas & electricity even though the unit prices are up.
