Email address?

Let's say you were going to communicate with a prospective employer, do you think they would be at all interested in your email address?  I've had mine with Gmail for 18 years.

The address I have is a comic strip character with some numbers after it.  In no way is it offensive.

Myfirstname.Mylastname@gmail.com is taken.

I have a fairly innocuous email address and use this for communications outside of work. I did have a rather unprofessional email address (I blame the 2000's and Eminem in particular) that I had to let go the way of the dodo.

If you are reaching out to prospective employers I would go with one somewhat more professional. Maybe a lastname.town@gmail.com

I would definitely have a new account with a "straight" name.  At worst, it will make no difference and nobody will care.  But there is some chance you'll avoid someone thinking "what kind of name is this?"

Also, with a new account, your email won't be as clogged with spam and other messages, so the business emails will be easier to see and file.   Try using a middle initial or middle name for your account name, or firstnamealastname.city

Square's question is good.  I never really thought about this.

No, my 3 different personal emails with 1 of them I use on resumes, don't have my name. Only part. There's others in this world with my name and I have no clue what their  combinations are.  There is an explanation to each of my email names and it isn't tied to any star/cartoon/cultural thing.

The 1 email used on resumes for past 20 yrs....yes, I've gotten jobs after interview stage. (sometimes 2nd interview stage)

When I first started in real estate I had my original "ibhim@aol" and other pseudo-anonymous emails, including a tizeye version at yahoo. Hardly professional. I still use the address for people/businesses/political that demand your email then intend to use it as a marketing/solicitation tool. I just checked - on Yahoo I have 999+ unread emails and on aol I have 8400 unread emails. :D

Then I remembered, my son told me about this new start-up called Google who was creating GMAIL and had gotten "myname"@gmail. Checked and it was still active so used it almost exclusively now. I say almost because I have others related to some domain name URL's I own. The only thing my son didn't tell me was to buy Google stock...so there went his inheritance!

While thought it was good to get "myname" it does have difficulty as I get bogus email as everyone else has a # or symbol that somehow gets omitted. Likewise, by google rules I (the undotted version) own every version of the dotted version, such as my.name@gmail or my.na.me@gmail. I got one of those today for an Infinity I don't own as they attached the receipt for service provided at their NC dealership. I usually try to contact them to correct their records, but some have been very difficult, like ATT and Sanlander Bank who won't talk to their non-customer. The individual in Virginia who sent me an email that was arriving at LAX and would interview me for the job then got a direct reply from me about the bad email and he was very thankful. I have had about 6 auto dealers around the country concerning my new car. If they ignore my request to contact the customer and update the email, when I get the service satisfaction survey...guess who gets trashed, and it gets their attention.

Creates an email account with a professional sounding name, either through gmail or a website you own. My latest created last week (no website yet, but email active) larry@lenswilltravel.com, and others, like larry@orlandoshome.com or larry@imagesforrealestate.com...but gmail is my primary that I always check first.

I've interviewed maybe 100 people over the past 20 years.  I never cared about their email address.  My wife suggested I have a more profession one.

Hmm, I'll work on it.

I do take notice and although not a deal breaker some have made me wonder about people's professionalism or decision making skills.  If you are looking for a job with children do not use little death as your email.

For you, at this point in your career, I do think it should be some version of your name used for the purpose of interacting with potential employees.  Last name, first, middle initial as an example.

I have interview quite a few, not as many as you, but I do take notice of things like that.  Too cutesy or something like flygirl@hotmail.com gets tossed in the trash without consideration. I think your wife is correct.  I also don't use an email that is associated with social media sites.  It is a divided world so be neutral.

I haven't interviewed in a while, but, yes, things like email address matter.  Just a little thing like is this guy or girl smart enough to use a professional or at least innocuous address, or are they so clueless that they don't understand lazy.sob@tiktok.com isn't a good look.  Details matter in competititions

Most definitely not a hotmail.com extension.

I've read this a lot of places but still can't understand why/why not.  I think Hotmail is 100% of the Outlook ecosystem, so not sure what the difference is other than it is "old" like Yahoo, AOL, or some others?

I was thinking it might also be an option for one of the domains you own & control to be the e-mail address.  FirstName.LastName@squarewheelscycling.com should have some pretty good street cred.

I created first name.lastname59@gmail.com when I was looking for a job. I also have a BU.edu account that would look good too. An application with a professional address is more likely to get a response than azzmuncher@pornhub.com don’t you think? Or maybe you didn’t care as a hiring manager. I would.

Using the current year for the first one is a giveaway that the account was just established.  Not sure why, but I might want to avoid that.

For the second one, will all the jobs you're considering be in an area related to that forum?  If you're expanding the scope of your search, I might not want to use that one.  If that is the scope of the search, then maybe I'd use that but with first and last name?

I'd try adding a middle name or initial (if you have one) or perhaps your name followed by "work" or a location (that is broad enough to cover your search area)

How about   first name.last name or last name.first name@outlook?   Looks like some of those may be available if you add a period between names

I never thought of it as per lst above link..that my email could show my citizenship status (or place of residency). Well, nothing to hide by me.  I've been using .com on resume.  Interesting about using an university's domain if one works/studies at the institution. Again that's passe ages ago for most of us.

Yes, I know the "risk" of a personal blog.

This is why I do believe a personal public blog needs to be properly designed (alot of nice canned designs to choose), always good photos and properly written blog posts.  At this time in life, I'm less worried. Yes, the blog content is where people may "judge".  In fact, I gave my blog link in my employee profile last yr.  Employees, if they are featured internally on our intranet, can choose to give their personal blog link,  as part of their personal interest facet.

My organization supports cycling as part of active transportation....in fact, my employer is responsible for building our city's cycling infrastructure.  I realize not all prospective employers aren't like that at all (and don't care).

OK, I created a new one, but I don't like it.

Here are two choices.

MyName22@outlook.com - I couldn't use my FirstLast as it was taken, so I added the current year to it.

MyFirstName@pathlabtalk.com (my other site)

Thoughts?

I'd say either would be fine

Maybe you should use "hotmail.com"

I still have an active hotmail account that I don't use. I've only kept it for when I need an address for something where I don't want my current address to be known.  I may log into it every so may years. Last time I did there was probably couple thousand emails...all crap it looked like.

Work email was first.m.last@mywork.com   The middle initial was optional.    One year there were 2 of us who had the same first name and last name.  Different middle initial.   What a PAIN that was.  If I recall I eliminated my middle initial, therefore I was alphabetically before the other guy in the email directory.   That helped...  but then I got more of his email.

Now I use my last name and the year when I created the email address.   You probably can see my email address in my profile.

The BEST part about having a clone at work.   One day this woman calls me and just starts telling me how I haven't seen her in years, and I need to visit, etc...   I was like :dontknow:    Who is this???   "This is your mother."   :dontknow: :frantics:    "My mother's name is Emily. What's your name?"  " crickets...  "      I called my clone... and told him to call his mother, she's upset.    He quit in 6 months or less.   That was a good thing....

For a while I had two guys with the same last name but we all had dramatically different first names.  Neither of those bastards ever once forwarded an erroneously addressed email to me, but I did several to them. :rolleyes:
