Have you ever had a panic attack?

I am watching Ted Lasso, the main character has had a couple of them.

I have been through some trying times, but have been lucky enough to avoid ever having one so far. They don’t look fun.   The quarrelsome ex had them, and an ex boss had them, too, I had to talk them through a few.   I am guessing that they are not as uncommon as people would believe them to be.

Hell, after living in NYC and among New Yorkers, I am guessing mental illness is far more common than most people thought, too.

I had one without knowing what was happening. It happened as I was registering #2 son for his first year of Transition Services, which is the school managed vocational education program for students with IDD after they’ve aged out of high school. The instructor asked me a series of questions about his supports, and I became overwhelmed. But I didn’t recognize what was happening because I had not felt that way ever. Heart pounding, shallow breath…the irrational need to get out of that room. I was just filling out paperwork. I had no idea why I was in panic.

The two I had felt much like this. Mine were triggered by family related stresses, and then buying our new house and moving into a different state. Both times I felt like I was being smothered and needed to go outside to breathe.

Yeah but caused by NyQuil.  That shit screws with my head. I don’t have have them normally, I get angina instead.

Do you still use NyQuil? I quit many years ago when the physician I was seeing told me not to take it. Too many different things and none are really good for you. It’s been close to 20 years.

I haven't had a panic attack, but there have been occasions, during stressful times, when a new, small problem arose and I mentally blew it all our of proportion because of all the other stuff I was dealing with.

I need to have a complete list of my last lost-in-fire household stuff done by the end of next week and it's about 3 days of a few hours a day's work. There's plenty of time, but I'm getting nervous and berating myself for not getting into it this week yet.  Of course, that attitude has kept lazy me from not getting things done on time in the past.

Never a panic "attack", but certainly times where nerves, stress, or worry was messing with my life - usually sleep.  It was pretty unpleasant - not getting good sleep or worrying about something - but compared to a panic attack, it seems relatively easy.

No I stopped. I used to take it as a child and was having trouble sleeping due to a bad cold many years a go so thought I’d try it.  The first night I awoke in a panic, heart racing pacing around the room with no real reason why.  I eventually calmed down and went back to bed.  The second night I was having bizarre thoughts and again pacing around in a panic.  This time my wife awoke & calmed me down.  I shit canned the NyQuil after that & haven’t taken it since.

I was at my doctors office telling him I think I have blood clots. All of a sudden I couldn’t catch my breath and started to faint. He asked me if I ever had panic attacks. Dipshit. Then he called me in the ER that afternoon , and sounded surprised when I told him I nearly died of a massive pulmonary embolism. Dipshit.

Yes but they have been pretty short lived......when you are racing and you are in the air about to crash and there's nothing you can do......you have 1.2 seconds to panic before impact.

My wife once asked me if I was worried about crashing when mountain biking.  I said I don’t think about crashing.

She than asked, what do you think about.  The only thing going through my head is weeee weee weee.  And when you crash?  Weeeee oh shiii ow!

One day my sister asked Wo46...aren't you scared riding on that thing at that speed?

Wo46 in a calm voice said....

I don't have time to be scared and took a drink of her whiskey on the rocks.

I haven't had panic attacks as described..only heart beating fast enough I had to consciously do some yoga breathing.. but close to it, especially when I got some  minor pain in abdomen, arm...had cardiotesting etc. by specialist lab .  It is constipation for me etc. that can cause strange tightness in my chest, etc. Believe me, I have to really try to relax, walk around, sit up, press my tummy, etc.   And go to the washroom.  every single tactic to deal with gas.

It wasn’t just paperwork.

Panic..  no.   Frustration, yes.

Once...  I didn't panic... I just hoped for the best.

At our old home, when we raked / leaf blew the leaves, I'd load a 12 X 14 tarp (many many times) and drag that to a bluff and throw the leaves over the bluff.   One day... I lost my balance and thru the leaves, and myself, over the bluff.  It was about 35 feet down to the bottom, and is fairly steep.  I wasn't scared..  but I knew it things may not end well at all. Time slowed down... I was just aware of my impending doom.

I suppose that must be how @BR46 must feel during a crash.   It's not the falling (in my case) it's the sudden stop that won't be a good thing.

I was lucky and survived.  I climbed back up the bluff, not an easy task.   Then I just sat there...  like OMG what just happened?    WoBG comes to my side of the home from where she was raking leaves...  "So you are taking a brake?"

My sister, was about 10 ft. in her car from going over a cliff. Her car went crashing through a bunch of trees. She was driving to work outside of Toronto.

When she relayed the story, she looked sick..this was about  4 days after the accident. She had some PSTD for awhile. She's....the doctor.
