Razors Edge ★ Posted February 28, 2022 Share #1 Posted February 28, 2022 Watching an actual "history" show on the History Channel (shocking!), and it was about Nabisco. The head guy forced out some early partners, and they formed a rival - Sunshine Biscuits - and invented the Hydrox cookie. It was huge, so Nabisco countered with the Hershey cocoa-sourced Oreo. As a kid, I never would knowingly or willingly buy Hydrox. It wasn't on my radar. Oreo all the way. If someone had Hydrox, to me, that was the same as the "store brand" or generic. Had no idea it was the actual "original". Sunshine Biscuits, formerly known as The Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company eventually became part of Keebler/Kelloggs. How about you? It was VERY popular when it came out (sort of revolutionary), but the name -derived from the purest of pure - water (and H2O - hydrogen & oxogen) being the inspiration. Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted February 28, 2022 Share #4 Posted February 28, 2022 Hydrox are nasty. Oreos all the way, but I usually only eat them after donating blood.
Longjohn ★ Posted February 28, 2022 Share #5 Posted February 28, 2022 I never heard of Hydrox either. I used to buy Oreos for Esther and the grandkids.

I don’t know what their biscuits taste like but I think their committee is great.

When I was a kid, Hydrox and Oreos were rare: we got it sometimes when they were on sale. I liked Oreos better. A piece of bread with margarine and jam spread thin was our treat.
Rattlecan ★ Posted February 28, 2022 Share #9 Posted February 28, 2022 I saw that show a while back. I don't remember Hydrox, maybe not even available here in Canada, but I remember thinking that was a terrible name for a food item when I saw the show.

There is a new package in the cupboard as of yesterday with only a couple missing. Ask me how I know...
Prophet Zacharia Posted February 28, 2022 Share #12 Posted February 28, 2022 Oreos. I agree with the appraisal that hydrox seem generic. I don’t care if they predated the Oreo.
