In 1815, Napoleon, having escaped exile on the island of Elba, arrived in Cannes, France, and headed for Paris to begin his “Hundred Days” rule, which ended with the Battle of Waterloo.  His escape inspired the palindrome:

Able was I ere I saw Elba
