donkpow Posted March 18, 2022 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2022 When I lived out there as a young teenager, it was a rite of passage to drive a car before you were legally allowed to do it.
MoseySusan Posted March 18, 2022 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2022 With a spare tire… Posted speed is 75, so you know they were doing at least 82.

My '05 Ford had a full size spare with the same rim as the other 4 (so does my '15 Cheby) If'n it's any kind of those donut or mini spares, they are mph rated to <55 or so. 12string Posted March 18, 2022 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2022 "spare tire" is probably just a way to make the story more horrible (like it needed that). I don't think any pickups have low speed rated or off sized spares. Of course, a dad that responsible probably made sure all the tires including the spare were properly inflated.
MoseySusan Posted March 18, 2022 Share #8 Posted March 18, 2022 Reports here are that the spare failed and that’s what caused the driver to lose control and veer into the oncoming van.

But more likely a worn and/or dry rotted spare that too many folks might grab "just until we get the old one replaced".

In the configuration of the whole thing, a failed spare tire seems more directly related to the cause than a 13 yr old driver. I’m not sure an experienced, older driver would have been able to manage a front, left tire blowout at 75 mph. 1
