Popular Post Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted March 24, 2022 Popular Post Share #1 Posted March 24, 2022 This is a story of Shirley. Wo7 and I had lunch with Shirley on Wednesday in Vienna. We first met Shirley in Spring 2000 at the beginning of the pandemic. Masks were used but still new. Restaurants were adapting to changes in business models. Wo7 and I had just went to the dentist for cleaning and stuff. Decided to grab lunch nearby. We sat outside. Table next to us was an older lady seated alone. She complimented Wo7 on her mask, which was homemade. She was waiting on a friend to arrive. We chatted, Wo7 gave her an extra mask she had. By the end of lunch we had exchanged phone numbers. She was planning her 90th birthday party in a few months. Gave me a cookbook she had made for the event. Recipes and stories were all contributed by friends and family. We learned that she moved to Vienna in 1941. Bought the house she lives in now, in 1964. Married, divorced, two kids, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. When she was young she lived in Rochester NY and when school got out, she’d ride the train or bus to Pittsburgh to spend the summer with her Grandma out in the country. “Back then, we didn’t have play clothes, you just went everywhere in your underwear. We didn’t think anything of it.” Played in the woods and creek, where she’d hang her underwear some where and skinny dip. One day her underwear fell in the creek and she had to run back to the house naked, grabbed a washtub to cover up as the minister was visiting her Grandma. She got busted that day, but that was one of her favorite stories. 5
