This answers an age old question that I apparently never ddged or googled until now. I always thought it odd that the hemlock tree was poisonous, and it turns oot it is snot, the tree was named after this poisonous plant because the smells are similar, Poisonous weed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conium_maculatum Non-poisonous tree: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuga

Ralphie ★ Posted March 27, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted March 27, 2022 And to use my Debbie Downer persona, the article says it is spreading quite a bit, mainly in the Midwest, but I will be in the lookout for it here oot east.
Page Turner Posted March 27, 2022 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2022 ...I was surprised to see this plant reported up in the Dakotas, and along the Canadian border. Most invasives from the Mediterranean are not that hardy. I find it fascinating that there are plants that have figured out a way to kill and eat us, as we decompose.

Wow, besides being depressing, this map is interesting in showing how most states east of New Mexico have small counties and most of the ones in the west have huge ones. Oh, and also, 2014 was a )(*&^^ of a long time ago! How far has this shit spread now?
Kirby Posted March 27, 2022 Share #6 Posted March 27, 2022 Is it only poisonous if you eat it, or can people have a reaction by touching it, like poison ivy?

The guy in the story was using a chainsaw so that aerosolized it so it attacked his lungs. A weed wacker would do the same thing.

Socrates was convicted of misleading the youths of Athens by telling them they didn't have to respect the Greek gods and related things. But Socrates did a stupid thing. Socrates had the opportunity to request an alternate punishment instead of the standard death by hemlock. Something reasonable would surely have been approved if he was convicted and he was convicted by a vote of 280 to 221 by the 501 jurors, But Socrates had requested that the alternate punishment be that he got a pension for life from the government of Athens! Apparently, he figured that would cause a majority to vote him not guilty because they weren't going to vote him a pension so the only possible sentence would be hemlock and they wouldn't want him to die. He was 30 votes off! The wisest man on Earth and he blew it!
