Randomguy Posted April 2, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2022 Why are they so dirty? Can't they just wash them for us before packaging for sale?
ChrisL Posted April 2, 2022 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2022 IIRC you aren’t supposed to wash mushrooms until you use them as water makes them spoil quicker. So pick your poison, clean rotting shrooms or dirty but otherwise edible.

You don't wash them before you cook them, you just brush off the biggest chunks. If you wash them, you pretty much ruin them. You might as well just use canned mushrooms if you're gonna wash them. I realize that you have forgotten what dirt looks like, living in the completely paved environment of NYC, but it's that stuff you see down in the subway, on all the floors and in the corners. Mushroom compost is different stuff.

BuffJim Posted April 2, 2022 Share #6 Posted April 2, 2022 My pasta dish last night had Enoki mushrooms. Couldn’t taste them, but cool visually.
