I left my feta on the counter overnight, at least 12 hours

Is it still ok to eat?  It is the kind that is in a pool of briny feta water.

I looked it up and, as usual, some sites were saying ridiculous stuff like don't eat Feta after 2 hours outside the fridge - probably wanting to sell you more.  I liked this answer best:

Ah, that’s not an easy question. There is no single answer to microbial spoilage questions like this because it depends on the microbial state of the item – feta cheese in this case – when it first warms up. It might be nearly sterile to begin with, or it might not. That makes a huge difference.

It also depends on the environment where it sits. If that environment is very clean and devoid of pathogens, the answer is very different than, say, an airline bathroom after a long flight from a third world country.

If the feta starts off sterile, I wouldn’t be too worried about even 12 hours in a clean kitchen. Take it out in the morning and eat it for dinner. I wouldn’t do this on purpose but I wouldn’t hesitate to use the cheese if it had been sitting out in MY kitchen.
