Pan Am began as an international mail carrier with seaplane service to Cuba and the much of South America.  By concentrating on flying boats that could land and refuel at various islands across the Pacific they became the only airline capable of competing with the then shipboard means of transport.  This was the jump start to the defacto flag carrier for the US.  They were however after 1950 denied the right to acquire or merge with any domestic carrier within the US.

Deregulation of the airline industry was the beginning of the end as low airfares made it impossible to continue the first class high dollar international flights in the face of increasing competition.  The handwriting was on the wall and Pan Am gradually sold off it's assets until it's final demise in the 90's

Cheap killed good as usual.
