Get him something for his hands.  Rubber lube from handling the tires all day with bare hands will eventually crack the skin around his fingers, especially if he's working there in cold wet weather.

I know this thing as that's what I did while going to school after getting married

Like gloves or some sort of hand cream?

Both.  I wore gloves in the winter when the tires were wet, cold and covered with road salt.  They are a pain.  Some mechanics hand creams work well also.
