Popular Post Rattlecan ★ Posted June 5, 2022 Popular Post Share #1 Posted June 5, 2022 The thinning of the herd continues. I restored or retro modded my Schwinn Twinn tandem years ago. It was given to me by a friend who had purchased it new in the 60s. My hope was that my wife would get into riding it with me, but after a couple of tries, I could never get her on it again. I had a few adventures with the grand kids, but that didn't last either. For the past several years, I've been keeping it at my mom's place, because I just don't have the room for it. A Mennonite family that lives a couple of doors away from her have been using it regularly and really enjoying it. The time has come to clean out her place, because she will be moving in with my brother, hopefully before next winter. Anyway, I offered to sell the bike to the family that has been using it, and they took me up on it, so that's one more gone. 6

The best place for a bike to be is with a family that will make good use of it.

Rattlecan ★ Posted June 5, 2022 Author Share #4 Posted June 5, 2022 Here's a video I made showing some before, after and during shots of the build. I built it before I closed my bike shop, so you can see a few interior shots of my shop.
Rattlecan ★ Posted June 5, 2022 Author Share #5 Posted June 5, 2022 And here's one I made 9 years ago with my oldest grandson. Hard to believe he is off to College now. You might want to watch to the end for the out takes.
shootingstar Posted June 5, 2022 Share #6 Posted June 5, 2022 Kinda sad, but I'm so glad the Mennonite family will continue to love their rides!
Airehead Posted June 5, 2022 Share #7 Posted June 5, 2022 Outtakes were worth watching. Glad to know the tandem will be used.
team scooter Posted June 5, 2022 Share #8 Posted June 5, 2022 I have a 1965 Schwinn tandem deluxe in the raspberry color I'll be needing to sell when I start selling off all our bikes. No sense in leaving them sit in the basement when others could use them.

Longjohn ★ Posted June 5, 2022 Share #11 Posted June 5, 2022 What kind of brakes did you put on there? Must be something in the hub but the only thing I have seen in the hub is a coaster brake. Tell me about those brakes. It’s a nice clean look.

The original drive train was a 5 speed freewheel with a drum brake. The front had a caliper brake but the original wheels were Schwinn’s proprietary 26 inch wheels so the brake wouldn’t reach the standard 26” wheel I built for it. The roller brakes work okay. We're down to four newer comfort type bikes, four or five 1970s bikes, two tandems, a few vintage kid's bikes and a 1950s chain drive kids tricycle. We've already given some away. Mrs cant ride anymore, and she was my motivation.

Hope you keep a few bikes for yourself to ride.

Interestingly when the one I have was new, I was three years old, and only lived a few blocks from the Schwinn factory where it was made.
