ChrisL Posted June 23, 2022 Share #1 Posted June 23, 2022 Now that CJ is mobile we let him wander our greenbelt, of course with adult supervision. We have a lot of Coyotes in our community and numerous small dogs & cats have been eaten. Dogs get snatched right off leashes as they are being walked. I always survey the area while my wife watches CJ and she says I have an irrational fear. OK but no way no how am I gonna let that kid get snatched by a coyote. Oh OK weirdo, your missing the fun… Then just today I saw a report of a 2 YO getting attacked by a coyote just a few miles from my house… Yea I’ll continue being a weirdo… https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/coyote-attacks-girl-fountain-valley-park-orange-county/2923146/?amp 3

jsharr ★ Posted June 23, 2022 Share #3 Posted June 23, 2022 Move to Texas. Constitutional carry and you can defend your life here. No one is going to get up in arms about one less coyote on the street.

She's old, so not as spry and listens as well, but with everyone there always warning me about coyotes, I would stay within 10' or so and scan the darkness for anything that might be wandering through. Never saw one at night. Saw them in other places, for sure, but none while she was out peeing. I considered that well worth my efforts, so I think your "fear" is justified. Back home here, I have brought my old pup and my current pup out to pee before bed and seen one of the local foxes (bigger than either of my dogs) lurking in the dark along the tree line 20' or 30' away. I doubt a fox (non-rabid) would attack a 20# dog, but maybe they would???

We usually bring out balls that we’ll toss & kick and CJ will run after and she’d rather I do that but she doesn’t keep watch so I don’t. Same when we walk Jack, she never looks back so I always escort them on evening walks. I usually walk a few feet behind them as coyotes generally attack from behind so they have to get past me first to get to my dog.

But I think the next one will be a bit bigger. Our Aussie was about 35 lbs, maybe a similar sized but less energetic dog.

One day when our daughter was visiting, we were playing cards in our sunroom. There were several wild turkeys outside in the woods. Then... suddenly... the turkeys are running and flying up into the trees, like their life depended on how fast they could move. And I was correct... a coyote runs thru the woods. The turkeys survived. We have seen this happen trice over 3 years. I'll guess it happens more often, and we just weren't looking out the windows. Every night I take our dogs out at 11:00 PM to take care of business before we all go to sleep. From time to time... both dogs were VERY alert and if they weren't on leashes I'm sure they would have run after whatever was out in the woods. The dogs we have now are ALWAYS on a leash when we got outside. In the past, at different times, both have just started following a scent and never looked back. It took a while to catch them. Beagles and Jack Russels are know to just follow a scent, and keep going and going and going.
