Ralphie ★ Posted September 17, 2022 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2022 And this politician quits to go to a Jesuit seminary. He offers to buy them a roomba so they can devote some cleaning time to study and meditation and crap, and one of the others says, “Dude, you don’t understand…” I thought the use of the word dude seemed a little jarring and unexpected in that setting. 1

I guess there's something meditative and earthy about actually hand vaccuming or sweeping one's abode. Do they permit blenders in the kitchen? Devout, church folks are great understated humorists at times.
shootingstar Posted September 17, 2022 Share #3 Posted September 17, 2022 about silence: I live a great deal in silence. When I work from home, if it's not a meeting, I don't turn on any music. I can be very productive. I don't need music.. Which means many hrs. of silence at home since I don't watch tv either. I've been like this for a long time. When dearie was around, it was him that had a tv and turned it on occasionally and I would join sometimes. Or go to bed. However. because I grew up in a large noisy family in a small house, I am accustomed to dull roar of other people around me. It's ok as long as they aren't fighting. Now, that I have an iphone, I noticed during my vacation when I was using it heavily, it seemed to disrupt my equilibrium of inner peace....just this sort of phrase messaging I had to pay attention. I'm happy to participate with family but honest, it doesn't add to inner peace. Not really. It breaks up silence and calmness.

The Arthurs said everyone always asked if it was going to be a book full of blank pages. They opened the book asking you to think of the quietest place you’ve ever been. For me it was a glade trail at Killington. Sneau and woods make for excellent quiet.

The Jesuit seminary surely wasn't a completely silent place. The Jesuits have long been known as one of the more loose-about-rules orders of Catholic religious and are more "liberal" than avg. So using "Dude" fits right in with Jesuit reputation.
