U.S. town only accessible via Canada

Point Roberts WA.  Haven't been there yet and ..probably never will.  I knew an American from there, who commuted daily across the border to our Vancouver suburban big construction site for work.

I heard an NPR story about difficulties in this (similar?) town on attaining provisions when the International Border was closed due to Covid.

Yes, we heard/read of that in Canadian news also. Also some the Point Roberts biz, rely very heavily year-round on Canadian customers. So they were losing biz dollars.  Admittedly, I was amazed when I read this. Clearly there's enough Canadian visitors who know locals there/stop over as a curiosity visit.

And a lesser known fact>>

"Because of the border crossing in Point Roberts and the presence of Border Patrol Agents and employees, this small town of just 1100 residents has been rated as a very safe and secure place to live – so safe, in fact, that it’s a hidden fact that 50 people in the U.S. Witness Protection Program reside in Point Roberts."

It is now no longer a secret

Lake of the Woods MN. Boat, snowmobile, or drive through Canada.

I read about this...   From what I remember.  Long story short...

Surveyors mapped out the area around Lake of the Woods.  The northern point of the survey, got written into a treaty.   The treaty got approved, between Brittan and the US.  Then much later, it was discovered the survey data and therefore the details in treaty was  incorrect.  That point was nowhere near where it was expected to be located.   No one wanted to bother to change anything.  And there you have it...

Minnesota has a 25 miles long notch above the 49th parallel, because they didn't launch any GPS statutes before they did the survey.

Yeah it’s right off the coast from me. I thought this was old news but I guess it never gets old.

It is old news.  We have even discussed it here not long ago.

I think the NW Angle in Minnesota needs to be resolved though.  It should be given to the First Nations group as their territorial land.

How about this...

Chicago almost was part of WI.

I don't know anyone in Wisconsin that would want Chicago but we wouldn't have a problem taking over the UP......we already speak the same language

Not too many people who live 2 hours or more away from Chicago want anything to do with the city.  That includes most of IL too.

I kind of like that idea for Chicago too.   The city (all of Cook County too) should succeed from IL and be given back to whatever Indian tribe lost the land.
