I have an ascend 12T and I love it as a sit on time, comfy chair and it paddles and tracks awesomely.
groupw Posted September 18, 2022 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2022 I saw one at REI. To me, they defeat one of the reasons I wanted a kayak which is for upper body work. If someone else wants them, that’s fine with me. I just didn’t look at it too closely for the reason above.
Further Posted September 19, 2022 Share #6 Posted September 19, 2022 A guy at work has one. He bought it for fishing, to be able to keep moving while using his hands on his rod
Dirtyhip Posted September 19, 2022 Share #7 Posted September 19, 2022 We considered them. In the end we ended up buying a couple of simple kayaks and two SUPs. We really like our SUPs.

They are popular with fisherman as your hands are free.

jdc2000 Posted September 19, 2022 Share #10 Posted September 19, 2022 One of our local outdoor club member has one. He does not have the upper body strength for a paddle kayak, so he got a Hobie. It was very expensive, but it is also very fast. He could move in circles around the paddle kayaks and had no problems going upstream or into a headwind, with a lot less effort than we were using to paddle. I may get one at some point, they are definitely worthwhile, The only issue is that they do need more water depth than a paddle kayak.
Longjohn ★ Posted September 19, 2022 Share #11 Posted September 19, 2022 They make one for shallow water that doesn’t use a propeller. The pedals work a pair of flippers. I have never seen one on the lake but have seen several propeller types and they worked good, much better than the paddle boats you can rent.

I thought about a pedal kayak to increase my leg strength for cycling but decided to just ride my bikes more for that. I didn’t want to look like a pro cyclist.
