Is this true?

It is not true.  U2 had an amazing run.  I was on their bandwagon when their War album came out.  They went from 3 good songs per release to being able to place the whole track/album/release on play w/o skipping any songs, to finally listening to all their tracks/album/release over and over.  But... it's not all roses.... they had some lame-o's too. I mean bad.  But Joshua Tree and Auctung Baby are some of the greatest selling albums of all time -- and for good reason.

When I did my first piano recital and I let my teacher know how nervous I was, he said, "Don't worry about it: there's no such thing as bad music."

Well, there is badly played music and there are foul lyrics, but he's basically right.  I'll find something enjoyable in almost every kind of music - except the screechy Tibetan Opera.

I really liked U2 up until Joshua Tree.  At that point their style changed and not for the better to me.  The Unforgettable Fire puts me in a really melancholy place, that period of time right when I enlisted in the Army.

Excellent point.  The 1980s U2 was excellent.  They got progressivly un better as they got rich and forgot they were rock stars.

I’d give them “good”, excellent is a reach in my mind. Although the video from the concert at Red Rocks was very good.

I’d describe it as raw & edgy. Good or excellent is really up to interpretation based on personal tastes.

The Edge actually played with an edge.  After the Joshua Tree album the Edge lost his edge and the production made the sound more corporate. Many liked the sound but  I much preferred the raw edgier U2 of the late 70’s early 80’s.
