Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted September 26, 2022 Share #3 Posted September 26, 2022 Twisted tie rods on the Phord Pinto one winter. The flyover from the Custis Parkway onto the beltway iced over. You can’t go fast, on ice, on a curve, without mayhem. The front left wheel was turned to the right. The front right wheel was turned left. We ain’t going nowhere boss. 1

One side was a guardrail and one side was a not so gentle 40 or 50' slope that emptied out onto a plain of some sort. I would have rolled down that a bit, and nobody would have seen me down below. 1
Tizeye Posted September 27, 2022 Share #7 Posted September 27, 2022 Not flipped...but spinning donuts was a good thing. Growing up in the South, while it was a fun thing to do in a muddy field, it prepared me for the Northern phenomenon known as black ice. When confronted, instincts and learned behavior kicked if steering out without braking.

ChrisL Posted September 27, 2022 Share #9 Posted September 27, 2022 Almost rolled my 4X4 truck once back in the day. During extremely high winds on the freeway. A gust blew the drive side off the ground and I turned into the wind to drop the wheels. Numerous big rigs got blown over by that wind storm too. Driving in snow with rear drive and too much power is usually not a good combination. Yeah steering with the gas pedal... is good to know. 4 hours ago, Butt Punt Moose Rut said: How many cars have you flipped? When I purchsed my new 1977 Z28 Camaro, the sales guy asked me if I wanted T-tops in the roof of the car. I told him, "No. When I roll over the car, I want steel above my head." The day I started diving that car was the day I started wearing a seat belt. I knew I would get into trouble. That said I never rolled the car over.
shotgun Posted September 27, 2022 Share #11 Posted September 27, 2022 None, yet. My dad rolled a car back in the early 50's. His dad didn't trust him not to wreck a good car, so he gave him an old one that had bad brakes (at least that's the story I've been told - more likely he was just driving too damn fast for the curve). Nobody got hurt. He was on a first date with the girl that he ended up marrying.

Never for me, so far. I haven't flipped a car. A high school classmate who also commuted to UMBC as I did, walked into the commuter cafeteria one day and told us he had flipped his car. This was around 1969 when the older cars were heavy and low-mileage, but made of steel. The car flipped 360° in grass on the side of an expressway exit and stopped with the tires on the ground. He looked over the car and was pleased there was no damage his father would notice, then drove on to college!
Parr8hed Posted September 27, 2022 Share #13 Posted September 27, 2022 On or off road? I have never flipped one while driving normal on road. I have come VERY close while 4 wheeling Jeeps but never actually been on the top upside down. I have come furly close on tractors cutting on inclines. And then there is the 22% grade on Down Knob road where I feel like my bike is gonna flip over backwards.... So after all of that, zero. The answer is still zero. Didn't flip but now that I think about it... When they introduced the Lexus IS, they sent me down to Miami to a test track (flat parking lot with 2 tracks coned off) for a "ride n' drive" experience vs a BMW 3 Sport package. While that was fun in rainy condition throwing a water flume behind me, The other track had a GX (I was well acquainted with and gave the rider from another dealership white knuckles with some of my maneuvers, the fun was with the RX SUV. I didn't realize they had a rollover warning buzzer in them...but I managed to find it. No rollover, but sounded like a stall warning buzzer in a plane which told me I had achieved minimal airspeed at landing with it going off about 3 feet above the ground. While will probably have to custom order for AWD in FL, the other issue is, like the T-Tops, the moonroof in both the Escape and Lincoln Corsair. While virtually standard in the Lincoln, when adding to Ford, if you have the crossbars option they are deleted, and third party, such as Thule, don't offer them. I looked in the owners manual online and with the moonroof, weight is limited to zero lbs. While most people think can't carry a kayak or bike on the roof rack, I'm thinking, I'm thinking how compromised is the safety cage? If the roof won't support a kayak or bike, how about supporting a car with me inside it?

I have come VERY close while 4 wheeling Jeeps but never actually been on the top upside down. I have come furly close on tractors cutting on inclines. We took our Land Rover off road on some trails in Colorado. Twice I stopped... The first time.... I looked for a path over the rocks we were going to climb. I found my route, shifted into the low range and the LR climbed the rocks like it was a billy goat. Eventually we got tot the other side of the mountain, and started down. I stopped again. The trail kind of disappeared below. Just as steep, possibly steeper then that rock climb, I got out and walked the route until I could see how things looked. WoBG was there, our grandson, and our Beagle. WoBG saw what I was going to drive down. She decided they would remain outside and watch to be sure they wouldn't die when the LR would flip over. I told her... I'm not worried about the steep decline.... I'm MORE worried about all of the water. Lots of snow melt was running down the trail, and the trail and rocks were very slippery. Sill in low range,. I slooooly started down over the rocks, using the brakes to go slow. And soon I felt the tires sliding on the rocks. I eased up on the bakes, I needed traction to keep for getting sideways. Then I tried to slow down again, and slide a bit more, I eased off of the brakes and got traction again, and decided going straight was much better than slipping sideways, etc.. Yeah I made it. faster than I wanted to go, but it was still upright. I found a level spot and everyone got back into the LR. It was a GREAT SUV for off road trails. I'd guess my LR was one of the few sold in the US that actually was used off road. Another trip to Sedona we were off road again, and in the Bad Lands. The LR was great off road and VERY comfy too. It got 13 mpg on a good day and OMG the repairs costs were in the 'If you have to ask, you can't afford it' range. That's why I have a Subaru now. If the car was more reliabe... I'd bet we may have keep it even now. It was indeed comfy.
12string Posted September 27, 2022 Share #19 Posted September 27, 2022 After midnight, heading home, accepted a challenge, something over 100, a rise in the road, went airborne. Long enough to worry about would I land before that curve would put me into the concrete barrier. Stayed shiny side up, kept all the paint on my car by about an inch, never street raced again.

Further Posted September 28, 2022 Share #22 Posted September 28, 2022 Never rolled a car, really only one bad crash. Going way too fast in a Ford Torino, a slight right bend and a slight rise in the road, lead to an hours long slide,( at least that is how long it felt to me ) ending with the Torino slamming backwards into an Elm tree. I walked away, the tree and the Torino both died.
Longjohn ★ Posted September 28, 2022 Share #23 Posted September 28, 2022 One of my maintenance men didn’t show up for the staff picture. He called me and said he was on his way and tried to take a sharp curve too fast and his car was on its side leaning up against the bank. I took my F250 and a chain and a bottle of earl and went out and flipped his car back over on its wheels. Topped off the earl and told him it was ok to drive. He was afraid to drive it so we called a toe truck. They toad it to a shop and went over it and verified it was safe to drive. He and his dad replaced the dented body panels. I would have made him drive it that way. That was the only car I flipped.
