From the blotter

Canine culprit: On Sept. 21 at 12:27 p.m., an officer responded to a report of a dog at Smith’s who had apparently shoplifted a toy from the shelf and was walking around with it. A grocery store employee reported, “He’s happy and he’s shoplifting.” The yellow lab was running around with no collar or tags. Nobody claimed him, and he was taken to the animal shelter, where he remains.

Foot pursuit: On Friday at 7:11 p.m., police went to the Silver Dollar Bar for a report of a man who had been asked to leave but refused. When police arrived, he was no longer there. Forty minutes later, the 29-year-old Texan had returned, reportedly fighting with the bartender and servers. One of the servers had her glasses broken during an altercation. When the Texas man saw police arrive on scene, he ran into the alley, where he was ultimately intercepted and arrested for public intoxication.

OK wait a minute… Any crime including shoplifting has to have the element of criminal intent.  That and the suspect has to have a basic understanding that the act is a crime.  That’s why children under a certain age are not charged when they accidentally shoot somebody while playing with an unsecured weapon.

So a dog legally can’t shoplift, even allegedly… But an interesting twist would be if the owner sent the dog in there to take something & bring it out…

I was thinking about adopting that dog for that very reason. Give the dog your shopping list in picture form, free groceries.
