shootingstar Posted October 3, 2022 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2022 For some things, ie. living in 1 bedroom condo, it's not worth seeking out competitive energy rates for electricity. For the lst time since living here, I checked out some comparative charts. I'm not losing sleeping over this if it amounts to $5.00 saving or whatever. I'm paying slightly on higher side. For sure if one has ie. a single-detached 2,000+ sq. ft. house...sure, check out whatever discount you can get. I have other costs that are much lower than other people's...for 1 person.
Kirby ★ Posted October 3, 2022 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2022 Sad to miss out on discounts, but nice to already be living efficiently!
Bikeguy Posted October 3, 2022 Share #3 Posted October 3, 2022 Be carful what you sign up for. If it's an hourly pricing contract for supply that, could save you money. And then one day (or a few) the energy market could go up to extremely high prices. You could blow thru 2 or 3 mounts of an average electric bill in 3 days. Me... I don't worry about buying my energy supply from the market. I don't want to spend the effort to figure that out. I just use the 'default' energy supply rates from our utility.

I think I shocked my work colleagues who live in single-detached houses, when I said that I walk barefoot at home (only carpeting in bedroom) during winter months and wear shorts year round at home.. No I don't wear socks to bed during winter. I haven't done that since my 20's. I live in all-concrete building. The newer lower rises, combine wood and concrete....which is not good 'cause you can't guarantee decent sound insulation. (Developers get cheap.) THere are some advantages living on 1 level and in a smaller place.

I'll spend only about $1500 total in 2022 on gas and electricity in my rebuilt, super-insulated house and lower rates from 3rd party companies might save me $100, but then they'll raise the rates and before I know it I'll have paid more than the $100 over the main gas and electric company's rates - that happened to me several years ago. The complications of dealing with one of those companies and comparing their rates every month vs the main company's rates isn't worth it to me. I used to have a 3rd party company's lower gas and electric rates and it was fine for over a year. Then they started playing games, raising rates without notice, etc. and I switched back to the main gas and electric utility. Later another 3rd party company's guy showed up at my house and tried to fool me into thinking a box on my gas bill was the rate when it was not. I told him to get lost. Another company's saleswoman came to my door last week and I said, "Thanks but no, I've had too many bad experiences with 3rd party energy. Have a nice day." She tried to make her case and I said, "Goodbye. Have a nice day." and closed the door.
shootingstar Posted October 3, 2022 Author Share #6 Posted October 3, 2022 I'd rather control my costs in other ways which I would blame on my own habits..eating snacks and coffee out too often/wk., etc. Completely under my control. Mick's new rebuilt house sounds super-insulated. My gas-electric total approx. $600.00 annually so far. And I live in wintery, cold province Dec.-Mar.
