We are bucking tradition this year. No effing roast turkey. We don’t like it all that much. I still have last year’s leftovers in the freezer. Going with a variety of appetizers, vegetable sides, a pound of ham from the HB store and pie of course.

Smoked turkey is the way to go

I gave up on turkey years ago. It's just not as good as other options. I'll probably do a whole chicken instead.

Have you ever done a fried turkey?  My brother smokes a bird every year.  We normally oven bake.

My wife loves the fried ones.  I reckon that is what I will do.  I am a toss up between smoked or fried.  I like them both, both are far superior to roasted.

:frantics: why do I do this for just me?  Then again...I have not invited anyone over

Turkey prices are supposedly up 23% this year.

My brother and sister-in-law usually buy it and the rest of us bring other stuff.  I'm always expected to do 3 lb of Polish kielbasa cooked, cut, mixed and marinated in 4 lb of sauerkraut and a little of the kielbasa cooking water with caraway seeds - almost everyone in the extended family loves it - and usually do either 5 lb of German-style potato salad with bacon or a mix of cauliflower and broccoli in a cheese sauce.  With the prices at Costco for florets so much cheaper and already cut than buying a head of cauliflower and two heads of broccoli in the supermarket, I think that's what I'll do this year.

Unless you brine it first, stuff a lot of butter and herbs beneath the skin and into the cavity and then roast it. Very yummy.

I deep fried the turkey for many years. Far superior to roasted in my opinion. I could fry a turkey in 40ish minutes. For a while I was doing 2 so I could have leftovers. With 1, there was rarely anything left!

Last year, I smoked a turkey breast since it was just WoW, our son and MiL. Apparently son liked it well enough the daughters are requesting I smoke one this year. I smoked a breast this last weekend for practice. Turned out great!
