Popular Post smudge ★ Posted November 21, 2022 Popular Post Share #1 Posted November 21, 2022 Hey all. I haven't been around cuz I've been pretty busy with the big boy. I brought him to the ER on Nov 5 because I thought he was having magnesium issues again. He was shakey and a little confused. Turned out he had a raging UTI that also affected his kidneys. His creatinine was 5.0. 😳 He was shipped to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. They treated him for a week and a half. Lots of antibiotics and kept an eye on his labs. His creat actually topped out at 9. It started trending downward, so they let his body take care of itself. In other words, no dialysis. I kinda wanted them to do a session or two. I thought his brain could use it. He was a little scattered and a lot shakey/twitchy/tremory. His creatinine got down to 3.7. The sent him home with me this past Wednesday. By Friday his glucose numbers were really low (57), and he was super sleepy. The tremors were coming back kinda hard too. By Saturday I told him I was taking him back to the ER. I couldn't get him out of his easy chair, so I called the ambulance to get him. No UTI, but his kidneys were bad again. Creat was over 5 again. He was not his mental self. He said he was building a shack for me. He kept telling people he was building the wall. When I told him he couldn't put his arms on his head (made IV alarms go off), he asked me how he was supposed to figure out the electrical if he couldn't put his arms up?! Later he told a nurse she couldnt mess with his arm cuz she would mess up the basement. (Apparently I'm getting a mighty fine shack out of the deal!) Luckily she had lifted the bed for something so he was sitting more upright. I heard a noise that sounded like crinkly paper. I got up and looked at him...he was covered in puke. The noise was the projectile puke splattering on the floor. I grabbed an emesis basin and in a moment he had filled it. Poor guy was so confused he looked absolutely pitiful. I got to the nurse buzzer and she came in. She was a really good nurse. He ended up getting a unit of blood because his numbers were really low as was his blood pressure. He was shipped to Aurora BayCare in GB this time. They had a bed and could accept him. He is in their ICU. His is receiving dialysis as I type. He was awake yesterday but super fidgety and not making a lot of sense. Apparently we were supposed to go to Arnold's. I think Arnold must live at the nice little motel in Rapid River, cuz he kept mentioning that. He pulled out an IV, blood all over the place. Then he started messing with his Foley Catheter. Don't do it!! The nurse had a nifty sicker to stick to the inside of his leg, and he kept picking at it. I told him don't do it many times. Then he pretended to sleep for a moment, then looked at me to see if I was watching as he was picking at the sticker. Damnit! Anyone here need an oversized 2-year-old? Today he is intubated, sedated, and doing ok. I'm pretty relieved. I was getting super stressed keeping an eye on him yesterday afternoon, and then the shift change nurse had me super worried. She came in and just started doing a bunch of stuff adding iv lines and whatnot. Never introduced herself, never talked to me just whispered through the door to other people to fetch things for her. WTF is going on all of a sudden?? I called her out on it. ! got a call around midnight that they needed verbal consent for another unit of blood. Ok. Then I was super scared. I was pacing the motel room trying to figure out if I was going to puke or poop. I called and asked to talk to the Dr. She called me back in about 5 minutes. She said his number was.low but probably because of all the IV fluids he was getting; it was probably just diluting his blood. She said dialysis would probably happen today. I asked if she thought he would make it to dialysis. She assured me his condition would not decline overnight. Ok, so he's not going to die just yet....settle down, no puking. He is on the dialysis machine now. They say he is tolerating it well. 6

Razors Edge ★ Posted November 21, 2022 Share #24 Posted November 21, 2022 Hang in there Smudge, and keep up the vigilance. We're all sending massive prayers, vibes, love, and support to you both. You are HoSmudge's top advocate. If you have other family that can also join your support team, bring them in. Do not doubt your instincts where if something seems important or wrong, then make sure you get good answers and help being heard. It's a huge responsibility making sure your hubby gets the care he needs and deserves, and we know you're up to it. But likewise, lean on the folks here who have skills and experience with a whole range of health issues. Lean on family or friends who are doctors or nurses or have had similar health scares. 2 1

Kirby Posted November 21, 2022 Share #26 Posted November 21, 2022 How scary for you. Prayers for HoSmudge, you and all the caregivers. I really admire how strong and present you are for HoSmudge and how you've been such a great advocate for his care, but I hope you are taking care of yourself too so that you can continue to be there for him. I'm convinced stress impacts your immune system, so it's important to try to get sleep and eat right as well - even though it isn't easy and seems unimportant in comparison to what he's going through. Glad to hear things are looking up today, but this must be so hard for you all. You will all be in my prayers and let us know if you want to vent or there is anything we can do. 1

Popular Post smudge ★ Posted November 21, 2022 Author Popular Post Share #28 Posted November 21, 2022 Thanks everyone. You are truly a wonderful community. I love all of you....and I don't say that to anyone! Sooo, now I learn he has pneumonia in both lungs. From the Covid. His biggest fear, and it's bad. Then the doctor says that's why he's on life support. What??!! I didn't think about it that way! Now I'm back to being a mess. But as the nurse reminded me while we were having our meeting, his numbers are improving. 1
smudge ★ Posted November 21, 2022 Author Share #29 Posted November 21, 2022 I need advice.... He's on sedation, getting the dialysis, intubated... basically just lying in a bed with lots of IVs. I'd like to go home for the night (2 hours drive). I'm not afraid of the drive. I'm hoping it will give my stress a bit of time off, but is it morally ok to leave for a day and come back for Wednesday and Thursday??

Is there someone near you who can give you support and a nice meal? Make that call. If you was near me, I’d have some comfort food ready when you got home. I’d be all ears. Honestly, been tough to muster up an appetite. Sometimes I can eat, but this Covid/pneumonia blow won't have me eating tonight. Ya, I think I'll go home tonight. If I can't stand being away, I'll just come back. 4
