Kirby ★ Posted January 3 Share #3 Posted January 3 All wheel drive where you live is definitely a good idea! Glad you're home safe.

I have to find a steering wheel cover for the summer as my most wanted heating/cooling accessory.

smudge ★ Posted January 4 Share #9 Posted January 4 Before I decided on my Colorado pick-up trucks I was looking at Hyundai Santa Fe's. I was in GR talking to a salesman and said I need one with AWD. He scoffed and said I didn't need it. I told him I'm from the Yoop. Oh! Yes, you need that. I love my trucks, but I think AWD is probably better for some conditions.
Parr8hed Posted January 4 Share #10 Posted January 4 I was thinking about it the other day, but we actually have 4 of them. Both of the trucks are 4 wheel drive, Jen's Explorer is 4 wheel drive (not AWD) and G's Jeep is 4 wheel drive. Of all of them I trust her car the least in the snow but it is probably tire choice more than anything.
ChrisL Posted January 4 Share #11 Posted January 4 Good to know @petitepedal. Although I will likely never drive in snow AWD has given me peace of mind on wet slick freeways. Subaru’s AWD system is considered the gold standard by many but Mazda does a pretty good job with it too.

It was full time 4X4. The tires were snow (and trail) rated. I had to keep reminding WoBG... you still need to stop and turn 5000 pounds of steel, And it was very comfy. Now.... I remember it was the fist car to have heated seats, the Subaru was the second. The LR drank gas like it was beer on a hot summer day. (13 mpg was a good day) And repairs were often and they were in the 'if you have to ask you can't afford it category'. After 11 years I told WoBG the LR needs to go. The Subaru AWD system was why it got selected. I wanted something that was simple (no turning on/off the 4WD) and was good or nearly as good as the LR. Yeah the Subaru does just fine in snow, even better now that I use snow rate all season tiers. It's almost like the snow isn't there.
smudge ★ Posted January 4 Share #13 Posted January 4 My Colorados come with Goodyear Wrangler w Kevlar. That's fine for gentle rock climbing, but not for the driving I do. I'm looking forward to moving back to Firestone Destination AT2's. Had them on my first Colorado, and I liked them a lot.

I use to think the same thing and how ridiculous in Florida, as Lexus had seat and back heated. Then a customer pointed out how great it was. After work could swing by gym for workout and shower. Then ride home with a heat treatment for the muscles. No cold winter day needed. My current Buick has seat bottom heaters...not back. Occasionally will turn on, but only lowest setting. If feeling mischievous, will stealth turn the passenger seat up to high. Sure is getting hot in here.

I have to figure out what to put on my f150 next. It has some 10 ply, DH taars on it for towing now. But since I don't pull trailers with it anymore I want to go to a set of passenger light truck taars like an all terrain. Give it a little better grip in the snow and little nicer on-road manners.

ChrisL Posted January 4 Share #18 Posted January 4 My Subie really sold me on AWD & traction control. The power gets put into forward motion with no wheel slip and the cars with it just seem to handle really well. The torque vectoring to all 4 wheels makes a noticeable difference for me. Yeah the traction control on snow, ice & wet conditions are a plus but I find the overall drive quality improves.

She was a senior clinical Cancer Research nurse at Johns Hopkins and HAD to show up at work. On really bad snow days, the National Guard picked her up and took her to work - leaving her husband or me to slip-and-slide on a 90 minute drive to pick her up and bring her home - and then drive 25 min. or more back to my home. On days when the Guard wasn't going to get her, she got the 4-wheel drive car to make things safer and she loved it - still does.
