Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 4 Share #1 Posted January 4 Is now official in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. On the last day of the legislative session (1/3/2023) the senate approved HB-3869 which designates April 24 as North Atlantic Right Whale Day. The bill went to the governor’s desk for signature. My cousin, Matt Delaney of Pembroke working with his local representative, Josh Cutler, introduced the bill last year and saw it approved and signed into law.

Yes, because early whalers knew they fought less and so were less dangerous to hunt. They might have been chock full of oil, too.

Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 4 Author Share #8 Posted January 4 Right whales were given this name as they were the “right” whales to hunt. They swim close to shore, float when killed, and were in large numbers when North America began to be explored (17th century). Whale oil was used in lamps. They are critically endangered as their numbers are down to around 350 whales.

True story.
