shootingstar Posted January 6 Share #1 Posted January 6 After 2 yrs. with us, suddenly my boss mentions at a divisional meeting which includes our team and 2 other lateral different groups and their bosses. So 30 people in total @today's mtg. lst 5 min. of social chat for warm-up was some personal goals. My boss was the only person who spoke up. She said plans to do a 1/2 marathon eventually. Keep her so-called 10 km. runs each, several times/wk. She also just completed read 50 books in 2022. She was 2 young school-age daughters. Hubby has an office job. Not sure what it is. Honestly...it was kinda annoying, this self-promotion. It felt overdone. I know my sisters, working full-time with children, hubbies who work also and share housework, childcare...how hectic-stressed they can get and their daily health/fitness has been a major challenge for them. No, I've never told anyone at work, I've biked-toured over several wks., with own pannier weight....1,000 km. (and lost 7 lbs.), another trip 500 km., etc. Sometimes I forget I did it..since that was 20+ yrs. ago.
Razors Edge ★ Posted January 6 Share #2 Posted January 6 These don't seem like too "out there" achievements or goals. I'd put her comments in the "sharing some, but not too much" category. Definitely not in the "self-promotion" category.
Wilbur ★ Posted January 6 Share #3 Posted January 6 Maybe she is trying to seem more approachable to her reports. Either way, it doesn't seem like she is gloating and all are things she is currently doing or plans to do. This all seems like office small talk to me. One rule with a dick size contest though is the measurement is current dick size. Not what it was 20 minutes or 20 years ago or what it might be next week. Something tells me you have disdain for the individual because she was parachuted in. Make the best of it. You are in the twilight of your career.
groupw Posted January 6 Share #4 Posted January 6 Sometimes people say those things, not to brag, but to keep themselves accountable. It’s one thing to sign up for a 1/2 marathon. It’s another to actually do it. Letting people know keeps the pressure on themselves to achieve it.

Yep, it's one thing to even say you're gonna do something, another to put out some $$$ & a mild commitment (signing up), and another to do it. Some folks like and/or need that external accountability.

She seems self-motivated to read 52 bks. in 1 yr. with FTE career, 2 kids, jogging. 54 minutes ago, Wilbur said: Maybe she is trying to seem more approachable to her reports. She's making good changes where yes, other long time team players (over 15-25 yrs. with our group), have transferred to other depts. willingly in different roles they applied for. I'm a baby there ...only 5 yrs. with this group. I transferred from another dept. after 8 yrs.
