Razors Edge ★ Posted January 6 Share #1 Posted January 6 ...of stuff you buy - especially something like computer, phone, or electronic devices? I got my wife replacement AirPods and I realized I have tons of well-designed and durable Apple boxes laying around. Since I never return them and the devices last a long time, I seemingly should be tossing the packaging ASAP. WTF is wrong with me? And are you any different?
Longjohn ★ Posted January 6 Share #2 Posted January 6 I pitch them right away, sometimes with the accessories still inside. My wife would tell me to save boxes in case we have to return stuff. We never return stuff. I pitched boxes for stuff we got rid of years ago after my wife passed. 3
Randomguy Posted January 6 Share #3 Posted January 6 The littler the boxes, the longer I will keep them. Apple boxes multiply, I think. 2
Longjohn ★ Posted January 6 Share #4 Posted January 6 I found my wife’s old phones packed in their original boxes. Lol

The AirPods came with ANOTHER usbc-lightning cable, but at least I can use that in the truck now, so it isn't just tossed in a drawer. I did a bunch of "spring cleaning" last year, so got rid of a CRAP TON of boxes, but somehow I'm still finding them randomly. I got a new SonicCare toothbrush for travel, and had no problem tossing the packaging immediately, so still not sure why I have some boxes and not others. bikeman564™ Posted January 6 Share #12 Posted January 6 The only thing at home I kept was the box my Max keyboard came in. Other stuff I toss after the time is up for me to take it back. Some shoe boxes I keep, because they make great storage boxes. At work I keep all kinds of boxes from electronic stuff. Because when I have to send something back for repair or calibration having the original packaging helps. 1
MickinMD ★ Posted January 7 Share #13 Posted January 7 If they look like they'll be good for storing stuff, I'll save it, otherwise it gets tossed.

I keep the boxes for electronics as long as the warranty is still good. About 6 months ago I had computer backup UPS fail. I called and they sent me a shipping label. I used the original box, and shipped it back to them. The shipped me a larger unit for free. They were our of the UPS units that were the same size as the one I purchsed. Now that I think about it... I'd bet I still have a few boxes for stereo and A/V equipment in my basement that are from the late 80s. When we moved all of that stuff got boxed up in their original boxes. Further Posted January 7 Share #16 Posted January 7 I have all the boxes for my camera stuff. That's about it on box saving, I have a (usally) big fire every couple weeks and burn the boxes.

groupw Posted January 7 Share #19 Posted January 7 Many, many boxes did not make the trip. Many got tossed in the basement purge a few years ago. More got tossed when it made more sense to pack items other ways. I keep boxes for electronics while they are under warranty.
Square Wheels Posted January 7 Share #20 Posted January 7 Forever, then when I sell it I can give the original box to the new owner.
MoseySusan ★ Posted January 7 Share #21 Posted January 7 As I survey the boxes and packaging, I don’t seem to have a rule or guiding principle for why I’ve kept them except that I could use them again. The ones I’ve kept are sturdy. The ones I’ve thrown away are not as sturdy. I have every users info booklet stored in a plastic storage box. Yesterday I gave away an Oster brand smoothie blender through Freecycle. I didn’t have the box to give away, but I did send off the users booklet with the appliance. Same here but the household appliance user manuals are in a drawer in the kitchen and everything else is in a box down in my workshop.
