Pay annual fee for AMZ' Prime service

I'm not an online buyer of most goods. So Amazon doesn't mean much to me, especially at this stage of my life when I have 95% of what I need and my need to try on clothing in stores, given my petite size/height.

So in CAnada it's  Prime members, who pay $139CAN  per year and drive most of Amazon’s sales volume, can buy products from these merchants by clicking the ‘Buy With Prime’ button on their storefront.

There will a new extended service for Can. customers which I don't know what that means. (and not much benefit to me).

What does Prime service give you so far?

Mostly free delivery service and access to their online movies/shows.  It also gives you a choice from a list of about 7-10 free books each month.  Some months I don't like any of the choices, but other months I've enjoyed  the book I chose.  Some months you get a bonus choice.  I think there is also free photo storage, but I don't use it.

It seems to have really gone downhill.  It's been a long time since I enjoyed one I downloaded for free.  :(

"Free" delivery and "free" streaming movies & series.

yeah, this.  We've been Prime customers for years and surely we are part of the problem.  We recently got a new credit card that covers the cost of Prime as some reward benefit.  We (especially our daughter) use the music streaming a lot too.

I gotta figure - on average - a delivery a week for us.  That's essentially $2 per delivery for one (or same day or 2 day) delivery.  Add in a variety of shows we stream on Amazon, and it does well for us.

BUT - it does have a downside. Whether it is a net positive, net negative, or just a little of both, I don't know.

Free shipping and streaming TV. I see the main advantage to Amazon is a single pay point for purchases. I don't want to give my credit card info to ten vendors when I can just give it to Amazon. I share the free shipping with friends and family, Amazon doesn't mind. Also gift giving is easy. Amazon ships a gift anywhere I want.

nothing, I don't buy from Amazon :D

This...

I just about never buy from Amazon.  I don't need to kill small businesses.   I'll buy from just about anywhere else other than Amazon.   Amazon is my last choice.

I don't use Prime.   I should say... I don't pay for Prime.   When I needed something, and it didn't cost enough to get free shipping.  I signed up for Prime, got the stuff shipped for free and it arrived faster.  Then I canceled Prime before the 30 day free trial ended.

Exactly!  Gotta use quotes around "free". More an "all-you-can-eat" sort of concept.

Quotes? WTF? Why not just say it's a $139/year. Would you call a gym membership free? I mean it's $30/month, but they don't make you pay at the door each time you walk in. Is it "free?"

Old people kinda/sorta get a free membership at the gym. It’s included in your Medicare supplement wether you use it or not.

bikeguy, bikeman and I lead austere, boring lives. No Amazon Prime. :flirtyeyess:

I seriously don't have a need to buy more different things online.  I live in a big city, close to alot of stores both independent and national chains. I don't have a jam-packed life busy with young children that prevents me from dropping by in person to try on, purchase or pick up order.

I can see Amazon Prime, especially for people with demanding, sometimes exhausting and busy personal schedules...especially those with young children.

Or just watching streaming movies.  I just haven't gotten into that.

The internet provides a wider range of products. I find the local stores cater to the lowest common denominator on merchandise. IOW, they only stock stuff that they can sell a lot of. When I want a product, I do the research and get what I want, not just what somebody wants to sell me.

My needs have become more basic. Or maybe guys are ordering tools or parts.

And gals need another purse they can't find in store.  Or another piece of unique jewellery. I need a haircut. :D

It's not like I spend my time "shopping" and dreaming about shopping. A lot of my purchases center around car parts and supplies. When I worked on my bikes more, I needed parts the local stores didn't have. I go through the whole evaluation and selection process when I look at purchases. What is the best product, second best, ....? Who has the best price? Is best price is on the internet, can I get free shipping? The weighting factor on Amazon is the fact I have prime with free two day shipping and other no cost shipping options. Or even local pickup at any of several locations. I recently bought some pots and pans whose price in local stores is twice the price of a similar product on  Amazon. So It's a total value proposition. I don't ignore local stores but they do need to be competitive. I'd like to do all my business at Steadman's but the drive makes the costs associated with that prohibitive.

It snot free if you have to pay $139 a year for it.

Obviously, but if you pay full delivery fees in Canada, trust me when i say it is free.  It cost me $120 per package to mail out Christmas baking this year.  I am betting I average 5 Amazon packages per day for the six adults and my job.   Shipping in Canada is insane in comparison to the US.

Yep.  Every time i take delivery of a new aircraft, part of that is stocking the cabin and galley with service items.  That is everything from bedding to kitchen supplies.  I had over 170 items  delivered to my door, most from Amazon.  In fact, I remembered a few items for the latest aircraft while training in Dallas.  They are already in my office at home awaiting my return.  I would be weeks driving around to find the items and awaiting their arrival.  But… $139.  Lol

I don’t know if Canada is different but amazon gives me free shipping on any total purchase over $25. Who doesn’t spend at least $25? Then they send me an email that I can buy any items within the next 24 hours free shipping. I use that a lot because I often hit the complete order button and then remember what else I should have bought. If I ever am buying something for less than $25 It is easy to run the total up by adding stuff I always use anyway like sun block or energy gels.

My crappy expensive internet isn’t good enough for streaming movies so I can’t use that feature anyway.

I just purchased 44mm 3.90lb/inch springs for 6.95 with free shipping.  There are none within hundreds of miles of my location.  Thank you Amazon.

Kinda sorta free. You've paid for Medicare through your taxes. It's just another benefit of that payment.

"Kinda sorta free" is akin to the "there's no free lunch" concept.

I challenge you to find the "free" stuff you do regularly, and then point out where it is actually "free".  It's a rabbit hole almost as deep as YouTube!

It's free if you would have to pay for it whether you used it or not.

Here's another example for me. You know my rice cooker. Well I wanted one for like six months. You want a good one? You want a cheap one? You want a crock pot? Do you really need it? Six months of that kind of thing. So I was walking through the grocery store who is also a one stop shopping place and saw the cheap rice cooker on sale for 25% off. Woohoo! I ran home and checked Amazon for all comparable models they had, many were on sale. None beat the price. I ran back over to the store and bought the cooker. (Now Amazon pricing on the same cooker I bought is 25% more than the previous full retail price.) So I get the cooker and find that it doesn't perform exactly to my needs. I devise a scheme to improve the rice cooker for my needs. Guess what, I have to go to Amazon to get the voltage regulator. Nobody in town has anything close to this. Even if they did, like a hobby shop or something, it would cost me a fortune. Okay so I did all the research, evaluation, etc. and bought the device. I had most of the stuff here in the house to upgrade the device. So I did that then went back to Amazon and bought the finishing piece.

So Amazon fits in the picture. And you can do this on any scale. I'm not an Amazon "fanboy" but it works for me.

It isn’t always about personal shopping though.  I had a prime account set up with my last employer.  I found it saved us thousands of dollars a year to buy access card supplies via Amazon than through my access control vendor.  I ordered in enough volume that the prime membership made sense.

Amazon prime truck tried to turn around in my driveway while delivering medical supplies. Missed the driveway and got stuck in my yard. Had to call a toe truck and they really tore up my yard.

Did you claim salvage rights to the wreck????

I wish, those prime trucks are pretty nice. This truck was all wheel drive, I think the driver was fairly new. It was a strange weather condition. We had been having rain all week and then it turned to snow and we had a foot of snow over soft soggy ground.

What does Prime service give you so far?

I buy from Amazon a lot, probably averaging a few times per month.  I have Amazon Prime and it's worth it to me.

I used to save up small orders on my Wish List before actually buying them to get enough buys to get "free shipping." I no longer have to do that and they arrive a little faster than the old way.

I also use Amazon Prime Video.  I have a "Smart" Samsung HDTC where I can set up Amazon Prime Video to be read directly from my router, no computer needed.  I use it to watch Thursday Night Football, some current series shows like "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and various movies, documentaries, and rerun TV shows.

If you have a good, amplified thin-film broadcast TV antenna (about $40) tacked on your wall or window and get enough channels, Amazon Instant Video can take the place of many cable channels for movies, old TV series, documentaries, and some sports.  I did that for years until it got to the point where the Verizon Fios triple package (phone, Internet, cable TV) was almost as cheap in my area as doing phone and Internet separately.

Some years back, I needed a new GPS unit for my car and needed it in two-days for a long trip.  The Garmin dashboard-top unit cost $99 at Amazon, but 2-day shipping was $57 more.  Then a popup appeared on the screen that said I'd get free 2-day shipping if I would do a free, 1-month trial of Amazon Prime.

I intended to cancel when the month was up, but discovered Amazon Instant Video and realized it was a bargain for no-cable-TV me.  Today, the Instant Video isn't such a big deal since I have Fios TV, but the fact I can order a $12.99 belt, $24.99 7-pack of pocket tee-shirts, etc. and get the order in a day or so with no shipping charge is the main reason I keep it.
