Whelp, movement is going to be what ever you are comfortable with. When you get to the weights, I always preferred the machines over free weights. Easy adjustability, good range of motion, good repeatability. The first week, use about the least weight minor effort on the machines, after the first coupla workouts, you shouldn't even be sore. The next week, go up a plate, add a few more reps to the set. The third week, add another plate and maybe start to do a second set at the same reps/wt, or go to a max rep for that weight to see where you are (if you can do 20+ easily, it's time to move up a notch). Week 4 should start get you into the "a little tired / sore" range of after effects. In addition to the big muscles that are out of shape, all the little stabilizer muscles are too. Ya gotta get back into it gently to get to the long haul.

I was confused about that as well.  I don't think we even have a buffet in the gym.

Do they have a  juice bar? You'll at least want a gym that has a juice bar.

And DO NOT get suckered into taking a "bar class".  It ain't what it sounds like (but does make for fun viewing).

I notice in the pics that they don't have a tackling dummy yet.

Maybe that's why they invited........ never mind.

Sweet gym.  I'm jealous.

No matter where you start, you are still running circles around those sitting on the couch.
A friend of mine, a few years younger, but more out of shape, went to his doctor before we went to Planet Fitness for the first time. His doctor reminded him he Neto do weights for strength not for the mirror. Start with weights that you can complete 30 reps and only increase after 30 is easy. Then move up a notch. I took that advice to heart. Even with just focusing on good strength, the guy in the mirror looked better. Need to get the weights back in my routine. The HOA gym is not as nice as yours, but decent.

Met with my trainer at first every other week...and did his workout 5 times before our next session and treadmill 3 times..eventually went to working with him once a week...

Advil will be your friend for a few weeks...but kick ass...and you can rock this! :cheerleader:

Edi is from Albania.  Played soccer for the national team.  He comes daily to train the boss and his brother.  I am the new kid on the block.  Edi will not be too hard on me to start.

Went out last night and bought shoes, shorts and shirts.  Brought my gym bag to work with me.  Hit the gym with the boss and his trainer tonight for the first time in a long time.  Trainer is a good friend and was in my office yesterday.  We are going to start with cardio, increase my stamina and then start working on weights, etc. later.  Slow and steady wins the race.

I went with all black just in case I die, they can just bury me in what I have on.

Good luck!

And bring your own towel.

My first session was mostly assessment of my abilities...still stiffened up about 5 hours later and was exhausted...you will be surprised...it will be ok..you will just be tired for awhile.

Oh and don't forget to post your time or distance in our annual thread :D

I will probably ride the recumbent so the fall to the ground will be very short and sweet.

How often will you workout? And how often with the trainer?

Edi will be at almost every session.  Will work out with boss, his brother, me and Edi a couple times a week.  I do get a fair bit of activity at Scouts, but nothing like this.

Every year I come close to joining Planet Fitness until I realize that the closest one is 20 miles away and I would only go about 2 times a week weather permitting.  I have my own weights and bench.  I have some of the best walking around.  When the weather gets better I have the bike.  PF would only be used about 3 months a year and I'd rather be outside getting my exercise.  Skipped it again this year

basically this.  He wants me to spend time on the bike and treadmill to sweat off some weight.  He said something funny about why work on abs, nobody is going to see them under your fat belly.

You don’t workout to look great, that is a side effect. A strong core will help you with everything you do, even cycling.

The new owner at my gym has changed things around. He has increased the size of the free weight area at the expense of the aerobic area. He had expensive rubber floor installed and bought a crap ton of new weights. These weights must be for showing off. They are ginormous. I checked out the weight on some monster weights and they were only 45#. They are metal, I don’t know if they are hollow or made out of some light weight metal. You would think they would make them out of the heaviest material available.

I've been thinking of doing the same J.  I know how to do all this as a former athlete but I find the older I get, the fatter I get, and the lazier I get.  All those things I know seem to have evaporated in the air. I need someone like @Kzoo busting my chops.

Good luck and stay with it no matter how bad you don't want to go!!

It’s hard to know how to inspire people to do what they need to do. We don’t want to nag, that is your wife’s job. We know you have been trying, even buying spensive cereal and eating kale chips 🤮. You need a workout buddy to inspire you. Would your wife be interested in going to the gym and working out with you?
