Popular Post Thaddeus Kosciuszko Posted January 11 Popular Post Share #1 Posted January 11 The owl box, that is. The owl box arrived about a week ago, but work and life consumed the weekend leaving no time to put the box on the tree. We've seen the owl twice more since the original sighting, which means something is drawing it to our area. I don't think it's our dog; I think she's too big for the owl to see her as food. But in any case I thought it best to get the box up in the tree the sooner the better. I started after I got home from work last night. Foolishly I read the directions instead of throwing them out. Turns out the directions had a step wrong, and if I'd followed them the box would have fallen out of the tree. The inside of the box was pretty smooth, so I took the Dremel and carved some slots on the inside face so the owlets would have places to grip when it came time for them to climb out of the box. By this time it was pitch dark, so I stuck a headlamp on my head, gathered the tools, ladders, and the box and headed out. The box needs a clear flight path from nearby trees, so I had to clear some small scrub trees. I climbed the ladder and put the box hanger on the tree, about 14' up. The box itself weighs about 20 pounds, which isn't bad but it's bulky. The directions said to get help to put the box up - stupid directions. With the box resting on the hanger, I put the rest of the screws in. A little liquid soap on the screw threads helped. And so, I'm done! Not really. Looking at the box I realized some tree branches were hanging in the way, so I got out my pruning saw with the extension handle and lopped a couple branches off. Then it looked good. Picked up the tools, ladders, extension cord and was all wrapped up by 9pm. Not sure how the owls will take to living on the edge of the property. It's facing away from the house, towards the woods, so I don't think the lights will bother them. I wonder if the lawn mower and other human activity will bother them too much. 4 5

He should have gotten one of those before going up on the ladder, just in case he dropped his phone.

This box? https://jcswildlife.com/jcs-wildlife-barred-owl-nesting-box/ Decided against the web cam. I couldn't find one that connect up to my flip fone. That's the box we bought; it came assembled. 1 hour ago, Airehead said: Are their drains for rain and snow to exit. There are several holes drilled in the bottom; large enough to let water run out but (hopefully) small enough to keep snakes out. Although a snake would have to be pretty stupid or brave to try to get up 14 feet of tree trunk, taking a chance that the owl wouldn't catch on and invite the snake 'for dinner'.

Bikeguy Posted January 12 Share #16 Posted January 12 What they didn't show is how the snake got down from the tree. Probably still stuck up there like a kitten.
