Another ER trip

I just drove my 90 something neighbor to the ER for severe pain in the kidney area.  She called her doc an the advice was to get her there.  I left them my number to call if she's coming home because her kids life several towns away.  The ER seemed very busy and it may be several hours before they are done with her.

Tomorrow I will have to jump start her car.  She actually thought she was going to drive herself there but the car wouldn't start.  I don't see how she drives at all as she can barely let go of the walker to get into my car.

Cars today will drive themselves.  Please try to keep up.

Not sure about doing that.  :scratchhead:

The car maybe disabled, (battery cable removed) to keep her from driving away.    I'm sure my brother did that to my dad's car.

And then the alert for a lost woman who drove off and got lost.

You need to be sure... before you get the car started.

And you are indeed a good neighbor.   :)

I don't have to go back.  Her daughter arrived and will be bringing her home.  Hipaa prevents me from getting her complete status but that sounds like some ok news.

HIPPA prevents the medical staff from sharing her information. She can tell you if she wants to.

They're getting there.  I think I now have enough in my next-car fund to completely pay for my next car, which I hopefully won't need until about 2030 and they'll be loaded with self-driving features standard.  So I looked at a couple smaller SUV's.

When I got rear-ended in 2019 and my car was in the shop for a week (I got some recall stuff done while it was there), I rented a 2019 Subaru Forester and was amazed at the safety features, including an alarm that goes off if your head tilts over if you fall asleep at the wheel and all the lane-line warnings.

So I looked at the 2023 Forester and it has lane assist to keep you from drifting out a lane, sensors to stop you from running into stuff and more.  I has all-wheel drive standard and has about 8.5" clearance - good for driving in snow.

The small SUV that Edmunds, MotorTrend and others rated #1 was the Honda CR-V.  I looked at the hybrid version: 43 mpg city, 36 hwy, 40 avg. It costs about $35K.  A 14 gal. gas tank and an over 500 mile range!  It also has an 8+" clearance and lots of space inside.

Both cars have options between about $30K to $38K total including delivery, taxes, and tags.

The Honda HR-V, the slightly-larger successor to my current Honda Fit that I love, is around $26K, but for a little more and still great gas mileage, I might want a larger SUV next time.

Of course, by 2030, when I turn 80, things will be much different but I like the way they're trending.  I'd like to get an EV if fast-recharge stations are plentiful and quick or else a hybrid with help features that will assist me in parking, warn me when something's in front or behind me, warn me about switch lanes, etc.: I expect to drive my next car until 90 or death and want all the help I can reasonably get.
