how are you doing on your new years resolutions?

I completed my first week of paralegal studies coursework. :)

And I realize now that since I already have a degree, 15 hours of PL program coursework and a year of practical experience will net me the full credentials. That means instead of paying the school to study for another year, I could get paid by the lawyer to do the work for a year and end up in the same place. I just have to find a situation.

Can’t break what you don’t make is my motto. Seems I’m not the only one.

Are folks afraid of failure and/or worried about not hitting "publicly declared" goals?

Or is it that folks have an assortment of resolutions, they're just 1) unwilling to talk about them here and/or 2) not tied to New Years?

My cycling goal - a reasonable 4k - resets automatically on Jan 1.  So, according to Strava which tracks this sort of thing, I'm already 40 miles behind schedule.  That assumes a flat 4,000/365 pace, but I know (so don't worry about) it is much more a pace that greatly picks up when the weather starts to improve and the days get longer.  At 91 actual vs 131 goal miles.  I'm fine with that.

Fear of failing is my response. I have goals, like your cycling goal but I don’t view that as a resolution. My goal is to ride more than last year. A mileage goal is hard to set as I have a lot of things to accomplish at the house.

My Scoutmaster minute last Monday was this.

A dream written down with a date becomes a GOAL
A goal broken down into steps becomes a PLAN
A plan, backed by action becomes REALITY

Sure, you may stumble on a few steps, but that does not mean failure, it means you try again and you get better and eventually you reach your goal and live your dream.

Haven't lost any weight yet.

Haven't started walking the dog more, though temps and rain are mostly responsible.

Haven't created and started my 3-day/week resistance bands routine, but I did order and receive the workout mat I'll use with it.

I'll have made all the stock and bond moves I intended for 2023 as of tomorrow, except the monthly $200 auto investments.  I always feel nervous and ask myself, "Am I being prudent and financially responsible?" and worry I put too much into stocks despite the fact I'd be financially ok if they crash and that stocks are only a little over half of my liquid assets.  So I set up a budget at the beginning of the year when my emotions are subdued and then stick to it.  I bought Nvidia on 9/2 for $137/sh ($165 now), Home Depot on 9/26 for $272/sh ($331 now), Amazon on 1/9 for $89/sh (now $95), Costco on 1/11 for $478/sh (now $483), and Southwest Airlines on 12/13 for $40/sh (now $37) and I'm going to buy more Southwest (LUV) tomorrow.  I expect AMZN, COST, and LUV to soar in 2023 based on growth and fiscal trends, historic performance, and durable competitive advantages.

I did have another resolution.  I've been meaning to watch the movie "Bad Moms."

I'm watching it now.  The burned-out from being good, prim and proper moms trio decide to become bad moms. The trash the supermarket and Mila Kunis peeling out and racing around with "Daddy's special car," a Dodge Challenger, scenes made my day!

I don't do resolutions.

I have goals.  Considerably fewer goals since I retired.   If I figure out I need to change a goal, eliminate one, or add a goal.  I do that.

If I wake up in the morning... then everything else is easy.
