The drawback with using a tour group is you can’t ride at your own pace. There is NO passing and riding single file got to be a pain as there were cyclists in our group and people who weren’t real comfortable riding downhill, in a group, or on a public road. At the first stop, we convinced the ride leaders to split us up; one leader for the group who wanted to ride without braking and another for those with overheated brake pads. Worked out well in the end.

Hopefully now they have ventilated hydraulic disc brakes with warp resistant rotors if indeed there is such a thing. I can’t imagine pad brakes!

is riding up Haleakala...

WoBG, my grandson and I visited Maui years ago.   I noticed there was the touristy thing to do, ride down the mountain.   That didn't seem like a good idea to me.  Some noob would miss a turn, crash into one of us, etc...  so I never sad anything to WoBG about riding on the mountain.

A day or two later we are driving by the mountain and there were signs for the 'adventure'.  I never said anything.  WoBG says something like 'You like to ride your bike, do you want to ride down the mountain?'   I told her... 'No I'd rather ride up.'  (I have no idea if I could ride up... we don't have too many climbs here in central IL.)   WoBG tells me OK.  I tell her...  nope... that will take too long and we have more than enough places to visit.   I also figured... finding a bike that would fit me, and with low gearing to help me climb that much would not be easy to find.  I assumed the bikes they had were set up for using the brakes a lot and not much for climbing.

So I never did that.   I'm sure we found a place for a day hike, or we went to the beach and snorkeled, etc...

Once we drove up Mt Washington.   If I recall.. on a few days in the summer they open it up for riding up the mountain.   You can't ride down, you need to drive down.

Nope I'm not doing that.   I KNOW there is no way I'd survive that climb.

Stay at the Mosey home when you try the Sandia Crest highway while training.

5700 climb over 35 miles.  And you end up over 10,000 feet in elevation.    That would be a difficult ride for this flatlander.   At least the return trip would be better.

My area is considerably flatter and at much lower in elevation.    560 is the elevation at my home.

Yes. Best get to riding those on-ramps. The best time to ride the crest highway is September.

I’ve ridden it four times.
