Ralphie ★ Posted January 13 Share #2 Posted January 13 I would be more of a down person! I never miss a chance to tell my Haleakala story. I ran into a cow-orker up there! That was amazing, I thought! 1 2
Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 13 Share #3 Posted January 13 @bikeman564™ that is a bucket list item for me as well. I rode down from the top in 1993 with Maui Downhill. A fun experience but I felt like I cheated getting a ride to the top. If I get the opportunity I’ll ride up then back down.

Popular Post Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 13 Popular Post Share #6 Posted January 13 The drawback with using a tour group is you can’t ride at your own pace. There is NO passing and riding single file got to be a pain as there were cyclists in our group and people who weren’t real comfortable riding downhill, in a group, or on a public road. At the first stop, we convinced the ride leaders to split us up; one leader for the group who wanted to ride without braking and another for those with overheated brake pads. Worked out well in the end. 3

I noticed there was the touristy thing to do, ride down the mountain. That didn't seem like a good idea to me. Some noob would miss a turn, crash into one of us, etc... so I never sad anything to WoBG about riding on the mountain. A day or two later we are driving by the mountain and there were signs for the 'adventure'. I never said anything. WoBG says something like 'You like to ride your bike, do you want to ride down the mountain?' I told her... 'No I'd rather ride up.' (I have no idea if I could ride up... we don't have too many climbs here in central IL.) WoBG tells me OK. I tell her... nope... that will take too long and we have more than enough places to visit. I also figured... finding a bike that would fit me, and with low gearing to help me climb that much would not be easy to find. I assumed the bikes they had were set up for using the brakes a lot and not much for climbing. So I never did that. I'm sure we found a place for a day hike, or we went to the beach and snorkeled, etc... 1
Bikeguy Posted January 13 Share #12 Posted January 13 Once we drove up Mt Washington. If I recall.. on a few days in the summer they open it up for riding up the mountain. You can't ride down, you need to drive down. Nope I'm not doing that. I KNOW there is no way I'd survive that climb.

Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 13 Share #15 Posted January 13 I’m in the Piedmont of VA. My 18 mile local ride has 1,200 feet of climbing. Skyline Drive, part of Shenandoah National Park is aboot an hour away. The first 5 miles climb 3,000 feet. I learned to love hills. 1

And you end up over 10,000 feet in elevation. That would be a difficult ride for this flatlander. At least the return trip would be better. My area is considerably flatter and at much lower in elevation. 560 is the elevation at my home.

Best get to riding those on-ramps. The best time to ride the crest highway is September. I’ve ridden it four times.
az_cyclist Posted January 14 Share #24 Posted January 14 Last Saturday my longest climb was 27 miles and about 1700 ft of elevation gain. The two most difficult climbs were 7 miles and 1400 ft of gain, and 3 miles 600 ft go gain.
