Shu Fang ★ Posted January 15 Share #1 Posted January 15 I've been riding a stationary bike I picked up in the beginning of the year. I'm having a strange problem; my bumb (balls) falls asleep around the 20 minute mark. I have bike shorts with padding, and they help, but I am still running into the issue described above. I never really had this problem in the past but I haven't been on the bike for awhile. With all of that stated, is there a favorite brand of bike shorts you use? I'm especially interested in what the men on the forum have to say (I know I will likely regret this. This is a preemptive "Shut up, Kzoo!". ). ChrisL Posted January 15 Share #2 Posted January 15 I don’t ride a trainer or stationary bike much these days but I remember getting numbness more so than when riding on the road. I think it’s due to you not moving around as much on a stationary bike like you do on the road. I’d suggest adjusting your position & standing occasionally. I wear bibs but was a big fan of the performance bike Ultra products. I still have some PB bibs. I recently switched to Specialized bibs. They are the mid range ones and I really like those too.
Bikeguy Posted January 15 Share #3 Posted January 15 I like Voler bib shorts. It's been a few years (or more) since I purchsed any. Looks like the got a bit more expensive https://store.voler.com/collections/mens-bib-shorts-and-shorts I've never had any 'issues' with these shorts.

Parsnip Totin Jack ★ Posted January 15 Share #6 Posted January 15 Less than an hour on a spin cycle or a stationary bike, the inexpensive shorts should be fine. If you’re having issues, then that may not be true. Go big or go home. My experience liked Pearl Izumi PRO line. It’s more expensive but it’s the top of their line. I wear these for comfort on longer rides but my nutsack isn’t worth what it was in my 30’s.
jdc2000 Posted January 15 Share #7 Posted January 15 I have a variety of shorts from different manufacturers. The Performance and the Pearl Izumi shorts have worked well for me, although the recent reviews on the P.I. seem to indicate that quality has declined recently. You might also consider what saddle you are using on the stationary bike. A saddle change might be in order also.
Bikeguy Posted January 15 Share #8 Posted January 15 Then again... line the others mentioned riding in a stationary bike may be most of the problem. When I did ride indoors, I rode on rollers. Most of the time I rode on them for 30 to 40 minutes. Longer than that... got too boring for me.
Shu Fang ★ Posted January 15 Author Share #9 Posted January 15 Thank you, everyone. I appreciate the guidance. I'll let you know what I decide to do and what happens with my first ride. Couch

I'll continue to ride it and eventually figure it out. It just might take me a bit. Couch 1 1

groupw Posted January 15 Share #15 Posted January 15 Last year REI was having a sale on some shorts. They had the entry level PI shorts at a stupid cheap price. I got a pair. Would have bought 2 if they had more my size. the first few rides, I thought the the same thing about how the mighty had fallen. However after some rides to get broken in, they are one of the most comfortable pairs now. LG makes a pretty good model. I don’t know which one. It was part of a kit for the crane trust. We had a spring ride 2 years ago and he gave all riders a buy a jersey, I’ll throw in the shorts deal. I had never worn LG. Now I wish I had bought 2!

MickinMD ★ Posted January 16 Share #18 Posted January 16 My favorite bike shorts are whatever's cheap and has lots of padding where the body meets the seat. I usually wear tight ones and wear loose shorts over them. One day, members of the old LF challenged me to walk into Walmart wearing my bike shorts with nothing over them after I posted the picture below. I did. Of course, there are enough displaying-butt-crack, etc. customers in Walmart that I was barely noticed.

Many years ago on the FB (not sure if its still a thing) anywho, my friend photoshopped my head on one of them dudes and posted it good times. MickinMD ★ Posted January 16 Share #20 Posted January 16 I only normally ride for exercise a little over an hour at a time and ride in regular clothes and sneakers except for padded bike shorts and a balaclava to cover my head down to my shoulders when it's cold. I am not worried about speed, etc., just comfort and places to store my stuff. I keep my driver's license, car key (car parked in the trail lot) and $20 in a wrist wallet and a 6" x 9" bag of tools, spare tube, glucose tablets, juice boxes, etc. on a rear rack. These two are comfortably padded bike shorts I bought to replace the ones lost in the fire - one relaxed pair for warmer weather with zippered pockets for my keys, etc. and one tight pair for wearing under sweat pants, etc. in cooler weather or if I feel like wearing relaxed jeans. Performance brand shorts are probably my favorite. 148 miles, no issues the current model I have is Performance Ultra Shorts. Years ago I rode their Century Shorts. All good for me.

12string Posted January 16 Share #25 Posted January 16 Most likely it's not the shorts. Try adjusting the saddle. Height, tilt, fore-aft. Any one of those being off can cause pressure on the nerve. Then think about a new saddle. The shorts padding can help the numbness and sit bone pressure, but it's really more about keeping the skin from abrading and getting sores from the sweat and bacteria. That said, I do like PI shorts, but my favorite are the shorts that came with the Team kit from Scudopro. I do need to replace some winter shorts.
