shootingstar Posted January 17 Share #1 Posted January 17 ..even though I didn't state that numeric target in 2023 with boss. Yes, I am the project lead on this effort. She told me to think selfishly and not worry about the work pileup my delegated target, will cause downstream to my colleagues in stages 2-4 for they need to do in implementation. I get what she means. This year's target is double the % , over what I achieved last yr. (which I had no target and she + a sr. manager were very pleased with last yr.'s result. Things just naturally evolved when working with clients.) I'm not even sure why she is so fixated on this year. If I had not achieved other different things earlier in my career, this latest could have easily torpedoed my motivation. And no, because I work in public sector, we don't get bonuses. I've been at the top of my salary range for the past 6 yrs. (I'm not complaining, by the way. Since I like working in the organization.)

I feel like the folks I know here in the public sector - federal level - get performance based bonuses. Not sure if it is only those at a certain level in the food chain, but they do seem to exist out there.

If there is even a bonus or certain jursidictions, it would be for management or non-union roles. My role is more moving up the salary range...but as I said I hit top end several yrs. ago. Shrug. That's nice and I'm not cryin' over that. I know for my dept., my manager would have nothing in her budget for overtime, bonuses. My jobs in govn't have been union...which to me personally, doesn't affect how I perform on the job in private or public sector. It doesn't affect my work "attitude" nor work pace. However I've given a clear, real example how there are enough public sector employees who are expected to deliver service/perform in their job roles at a certain level. Service metrics, etc. have been collected for a long time in govn't.
Kirby ★ Posted January 17 Share #4 Posted January 17 I'm not opposed to specific achievement targets - but they need to make sense and be based on things that I can control. Sounds like there's not a good reason for these specific targets or at least it hasn't been communicated well. I hope the main reason isn't just to make the manager look good. Anything is possible when you're not the one doing it. When my boss would try to set goals I would point to my toolbox and say show me. 1
